OK I have to say this about this knife model.

The SP-51 has once again saved the day for a second year in a row this deer season.

Both entailed the use of it to clear a path to downed deer, clear an area out to field dress it. And for some odd reason the dang deer sternums were so impossible to cut through, my brother had to literally cut and horse the SP-51 though the rib cage. Really I shot other deer in the area that never had rib cages like these past few ones. And as cutting up the deer...for the hard parts cutting head off and other parts...it performed like a hot knife through butter!

Then to get the deer out, once gain cleared a path out for the deer.

Man this is a great field knife

Yes a field dressing knife was used on the soft parts. I prefer a good around 4" US MADE gerber with a large gut hook for field dressing. Learned the hard way to use a FIXED BLADE or LOCK BACK knife for field dressing. Any other thing like a liner locker isn't totally reliable. I also use a GERBER lock back gator blade, perfer gut hook on them but I got a few that work well for field dressing as well, and a Buck 110 is a great little field deer dresser normally. But for some odd reason the past few deer have had super tough sternums to get through the past few years. Could it be that they are older deer?

But for a one heavy use knife that SP-51 sure made things WAY easier the past few years.

The SP-53 probably could of worked but I like the straight edge of the SP-51 for easier sharpening if needed in the field. The SP-51 is just a great dang all purpose use knife! That saber grind gives it an edge of my RD-9. But to be fair my sister stoled my extra SP-53 but she uses that for short heavy machete work on trails she vents on. I use my SP-53 for designated trail re-re-reclearing after storms and such.

My various RD 6s and 7s and a Tanto got stolen this year for deer season by others.

But the SP-51 really seems to be the BEST all round general HEAVY use knife. Yes a few other tools could of been carried...but really with a SP-51, RD6 (it makes a logical pairing for the SP-51) and a 4" field knife and a sharpener and spare buck 110, that covers a lot of things in the field on the stand. Oh and a Baco saw because its foldable for the pack.

New year two saves from the SP-51 again!

Last evening was checking my shot on a deer and it was getting dark, I had to go through dang black spruce and norway pines and had to hack my way as tracking my quarry! A LOT of hacking. Then I saw it bedded down thinking it was in shock or bled out as it gave me a "WHAT THE HECK LOOK!" I moved my eyes off of it as a branch whacked me in the face. I looked at it again and it took off like a bat out of hell! No sign of blood, and the way it moved. And it was a while after the shot I can report a clean miss at least. Then I had to get back to the old farm house and more whacking and hacking my way out. This time a STRAIGHTER path back that was faster.

Today at -10 degrees I had to make a fire in the old wood stove. Wood I had seasoned maple wasn't splitting by hatchet or axe! So ended up batoning the logs to split them! (The Tacti-cool term is Botactitoning Tryannical Botanicals!) The SP-51 did the job as I finally was able to split it! I could see where the saber grind on the blade did the job to help split that sucker and some coating came off. Having to dig out a chopping pit in the snow and trying to whack the logs in cold weather could of been done IF the would would split probably but Botaning got the job done and probably faster safer!

I don’t ever use my sp51, though I agree with you on its merits 100%! My sp53 hasn’t seen any use either since I first got it and did steel integrity test. Funny how many sp53’s are for sale, but you never see an sp51 unless it’s a price gouger! I just have so many other knives for the same purpose, I figure why add 2 more knives to my already too heavy boxes of everyday users.

Its a nice straight easy to sharpen blade when on extended excursions that WORK! When me and my brother were looking for the buck he chased and chased and chased and chased away, the SP-53s were great day hackers and slashers through black spruce and alder brush. We used them as the best chopper around and it was not going to be an extended outing. But the SP-51 also seems better for batoning with its straighter edge.
