I went with a friend to a knife store today and was shown the Ontario SP50 and a Condor Boomslang. I left with a lot of confusion and found this site while trying to find answers. It seems like a great place to be a part of!

I found separate reviews on both, but between the SP50 and the Condor, which would be a more reliable wilderness blade? Would cold weather make a difference in how they perform?

I would go with the SP50 all the way.
The steel used is superior
The design is superior (in my opinion)
It is more versatile
I simply love my SP50 !

It sure looks that way. The sheath isn't perfect, but it's perfectly serviceable. I actually kind of like it because my Izula II fits into the front pouch with the flap open a bit. I'm either going to use shock cord to hold it shut or go to a craft store and buy a male/female extender for the clip. Then I'll have all the camping knives I need in one place.

Nice choice. If I had a use for a big knife, that's probably the one that I'd get. Ontario's 5160 is supposed to be excellent.

Welcome to the forum, this is a cool place to hang out, spend some time and learn.

As for the SP50; you made the right choice. It is a beast of a knife. I have been pounding on my SP53 for years. I even thinned out the edge quite a bit and it still laughs at me and begs for more.

I have no complaints with the handle or sheath. In fact, I kind of like the sheath. The two adjustable retention straps with actual snaps are a whole lot nicer than the cheesy fixed single strap with Velcro that you find with other manufacturers.

If the sheath seems too loose, there is an easy fix for that.

Remove the clear plastic insert (it pulls right out), heat it up with a hair drier, squish it down a little and let it cool.

Do this until you have a snug fit or like the retention.

Now just stick the insert back in the sheath with a dab of hot glue or silicone.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Thank you! That's a simple fix! I was able to play with it today and it only reaffirmed my decision. The Condor may still work it's way into my collection down the road, but I'm very happy for now.
