SP53 rust under coating

Hi,
I recently purchased a new sp53 and after some very minor use discovered that the coating wore off much easier than on my sp51. Upon further inspection I found specks of rust all along the blade under the worn off coating.I own many carbon steel knives, including several ontarios do in well aware of the potential rust issues with 5160. To make sure, I chopped some wood for a few minutes to see if as more coating came off more rust appeared and was disappointed to see that this was the case. I can only assume that the entire blade has begun to rust prior to coating. I have taken photos but didn't have time to figure out how to post them, if anyone's interested I'll put them up later. Was just curious whether or not anyone else has experienced anything similar?

Thanks a lot for the response. I emailed a few days ago, still waiting on a response. Anyway , here are a couple of close up photos, if you look closely you can see more rust under the edge of the thinned coating.

Ptac157,

I'll get with Customer Service and have them look up your e-mail to expedite a response. We are doing inventory now so things are a little bit askew.
As OKC Mod has mentioned; this is something that should be covered under warranty.
We got your back.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tooj,
I just received an email and have forwarded the photos. Thanks again for the great service, much appreciated!

Interesting. I hadn't seen that before either. I considered stripping and sanding the blade, but I wasn't confortable with the idea of rust on the tang since its inaccessible

Just a quick update. First of all I cant say enough good things about the customer service I received from Ontario. Very pleasant and prompt communication and a quick resolution. Today I received a new SP53 in the mail and I couldnt be happier. Many thanks to the team at Ontario for absolutely top notch customer service !:thumbup::thumbup:

Everybody should be aware of rust issues with 5160. It's a carbon steel and, well, it rusts. Great thing about 5160 is that it doesn't pit when it rusts like some other carbon steels. I haven't really understood the whole "coating thing" with carbon steel. Eventually, if you actually use the knife it's gonna wear off and it's gonna rust if you don't oil it. Hell. I'd cut out the middle man and just wipe it down and not leave it in the rain. Or wet. Ever wondered how the leaf springs on an old truck just seem to keep hanging in there when they are 20 years old and continuously exposed to the elements? Well, that's 5160 and they seem to do just fine.

Not to change the subject. But to change the subject a little. I just bought a Northfield #72. Most of my folders are stainless. This is 1095. After a couple of days fretting about the blade "rusting", I said "the hell with it" and stuck it into an Orange for about 30 minutes. Really cool patina....
