I'm sure you've seen the commercials for these things (especially if you've worked a night shift or had insomnia lately  ). At first I thought they looked like your average crappy made for TV gadget, but when I thought about it, the concept is a good one, and since I've got a lot of extra sweaters and winter coats taking up space I figured they were worth a try. I must say I"m impressed. The material is a bit thinner than I would like but seems to be pretty tough, and the large bag I got compressed about 14 assorted sweaters/sweatshirts down to a heavy little bricklike rectangle. I emptied out three drawers and now it all fits on a shelf. The jumbo bag is absolutely monstrous; I don't recommend it for anything but bedding. It's too big to fit on a shelf, but it does hold a LOT of stuff. Definitely well worth the money if you're looking to free up some shelf space.

Had a friend with one of these and it worked great until the plastic starting cracking. Smallest little crack and the thing is ruined unless you can find it and tape it up somehow. If I were to get one of these, it would see seasonal use only.. .regular use would wear out the bag too fast.

Funny you should mention it; one of the bags already has a little crack. I found it and taped it, but still, not happy. They only cost $5 each for the Large bags at Wal-Mart, so it's not as bad as it could be.

Why do you have 14 sweaters and sweatshirts to begin with? Most guys have 2-3 sweatshirts (1-coffee stained, 1- blood stained and 1-dress) and 1-2 sweaters that we got for Christmas, birthday or Father's Day and just haven't dropped off at the DAV yet.

Yeah, I want to withdraw this recomendation. Both of the large bags aren't sealing right, but they did initially deflate well.

Frank, I'm not even going to dignify that with a comment. Your small mind is evident from your post.

These things are the biggest ripoff going. Every one I've ever used leaked and would not hold the vacuum. You're paying $5 for a plastic bag that costs three cents to make, and the piece of junk doesn't work.

I picked up some of the ones you sort of just squeeze the air out of manually( not the vacuum cleaner ones) made by Eagle Creek.

Due to work I travel a fair amount and have used one of them almost weekly for my grungibles, stuff that doesn't need to be ironed :-)

The quality on the Eagle Creek ones are very good, much better than the similar Samsonite ones I got as a gift. The plastic is thicker, sort of articulated to fold and bend better without cracking, then anything else I've seen. Here's their site:

After a year or so of use they're not quite as air tight as before, and the zip lock kind of closure takes a second pass every now and then, but they're pretty good and really do reclaim some space in the suitcase.

They're quite a bit more than a few bucks each, and not often on sale, but if you use them a lot they're worth it.
