what would make good plastic-type spacer material that I could find locally very cheaply without having to purchase from a supplier?

scagel, used old bowling balls. look around at grarage sales. you can find old stone or plastic bookends etc. i found a real sperm whale tooth at one for $2.00.

Mike are you kidding me? How am I supposed to tell the customer?:

"Oh that? Well ... it's a .... um ... I just dug some plates out of the trash from a barbacue 2 years ago and ..."

Or maybe I can say:

"It's a special forumlation of Polyethylene Terephthalate - extremely long lasting. Forunately, it is very popular with knife makers and is readily available in a number of colors. My favorite comes with pictures of Spiderman."

An old master stock maker told me I could use the plastic of bleach bottles for white spacer material. Unlike wood spacers, plastic does not stain with the color of sanding dust from the main handle material.

Well, the guy asked for a plastic type spacer material, that he could find locally, and "very cheaply", without going to a "supplier".;)

Mike,

That was tongue-in-cheek - I'm sure you knew.

Actually I think it's a great idea and plan on trying it out!

BTW does good ol' Devon epoxy bind ok with it?

Steve

Yes, just make sure to scuff the surfaces that contact the epoxy.
I figured you were joking.;)
