I was hoping someone out there could help me with a Spalted Maple question. I purchased 4 blocks of Spalted Maple to use as knife scales and it's beautiful stuff. The thing is, it's like styrofoam, you can break it apart with 2 fingers. How in the world do people use this as a knife handle? It has to be the worst thing you could possibly use! It sucks up tung oil and super glue like a sponge but even that has done nothing to stabilize it. Any ideas guys?
Thanks.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'd suggest posting this question in the Shop Talk section. Lots of great information in there (a search may also turn something up).

This should probably be moved to the shop talk forum, but I can give you the answer that most of the makers over there will give you anyway. Send it to Mike Ludeman at WSSI to have it professionally stabalized. You can also send it to K+G, they do stabalization as well. Once it is stabalized you will have no problem with it.

Here's some rather wild looking spalted maple. I cut, dried and sorted pieces from 60lb CHUNCK :) Mike at Wood Stabilizing Specialists Intl. Stabilized it for me. Out of 60 lbs, I ended up with about 25 usable, handle size sets:eek:

Frogskin inlay sheath is by Kenny Rowe.
