Spalted wood

I see that some use spalted wood for rifle stocks. I thought the wood was too weak for that .Just how weak is spalted wood and does stabilizing fix that ?
 
Mete, Alot of wood handle material is spalted but it has also been stabalized. I'm sure it would work fine for a gun stock but it would be real spendy. Maybe you could get the stock ruffed out and then sent off to get stabalized since they charge by weight......
 
I think a lot would depend on the round being fired. A 22LR doesn't recoil as much as say a 50-140.
 
Spalted is a pretty generic term.

Some is rotted, but many pieces are just invaded by fungi which cause the colors to change. In those cases I dont think the wood would be compromised in strength.
