I've never had spam as far as I can remember , I bought two cans of it today , one original , one hot and spicy , to try it out. Is it really that bad? I mean like eating it out of the can? Anyone have some good recipes for it ? I'm planning to try it out at work in a toasted sandwhich.

I'd never had SPAM until about a 2 years ago. I love my food, and being Polish I eat, what some consider, gross things(pickled herring). I have no problem spending extra money for good quality cheeses, meats, etc. because I love food. SPAM always had that negative stigma to me, just as a gross canned ham that most people make fun of and consider gross. Well in reality, if you eat hotdogs and a lot of other things SPAM really isn't all that gross in comparison.

Anyway, to get to the point, a couple of years ago one of my buddies brought a can camping. We sliced it and cooked it up for breakfast, and honestly there wasn't enough of it to go around. If I go camping at a campground where I'm not worried about carrying whatever I'm bringing I go all out when it comes to food and preparing and planning meals. Something as simple as SPAM never really crossed my mind. The stuff really is not bad at all, and I think the IDEA of SPAM is what turns people off, not the actual flavor. I bring it camping with me all the time, and even on hikes. It's better when its cooked, if you can make a little spittle and slice that stuff up over a fire or in a pan its pretty good. And in comparison to some of the other canned/jarred foods out there SPAM is probably one of the tastier ones. Goes great with some eggs and toast in the morning.

I had to take a look at this thread. SPAM is ground pork and ham and is loaded with salt. Personally, I can't stand the stuff, but Hawaiians seem to like it.
I guess that if you like Vegemite, you may like SPAM.:barf:*

I don't know about SPAM as a survival food. What is the "use by" date on the can?

*I shouldn't talk. When I was kid, I liked canned Vienna sausages. :barf::barf::barf:

It is not bad, it is just nothing special.
When treking and hungry I was eating much worse things.

For survival spam is to "wet" and not concentrated enough. And can add to weight.
"13 grams of protein (26% DV), 3 grams of carbohydrates (1% DV), 27 grams of total fat" - means 43% is "food" rest is water.

I prefer something much dryier, with more proteins and even more fats.

Thanks for your comment uffda , I love vegemite. Spam however , I've got two cans , if I dnt like the first one I'll never bother with it again , unless I really have to. I'm planning on buying a decent stove setup soon , and trying some meals off that

I don't care for the taste of it at all. As far as tinned stuff goes I find corned beef easier to get down. That said, I don't tend to do processed stuff in daily living, so whilst there are few foods I'll stall at stuff in a can always requires a bit of adjustment.

I also think it is an unhealthy muck. I try to eat well and only load up on the unhealthy stuff when it really tastes good.

I don't think the flavour is necessarily the worst part. I find the texture disagreeable. It's very much like a really low quality dog food that has been extruded at some point. Key to addressing that is to try to get some texture into it. The best way is to brown the outside of slices by frying it in a pan. Alas, mostly I see that being done cub-scout style by stabbing a bit with a bit of stick and singeing the outside over a fire. From a daily living perspective that probably has some merit because you are dumping a lot of the fat from it by doing that. From a survival food perspective that is a stupid idea because you are just dripping the calories away rather than collecting them properly in a pan.

The OP posted about "survival food". I'd have no problem eating spam in a survival situation. Of that, I am certain.

Yes I meant if it's the last thing you've got , hence I'm gonna try it so I can see what the worst thing I'll have to eat is kinda thing, if that makes any sense

My too! In a survival situation I'd suck your eyes from your head and eat them with relish if it were necessary. I don't mess about.

That he also mentioned “recipes”, and indicated he actually gives a hoot about how “bad” it is was is a clear indicator that a more broad response then just “crack-on, from the can” was appropriate.

What was the point of your post, especially this bit The OP posted about "survival food"? As it stands one could be forgiven for thinking you are trying to provoke me.

Makes sense.

I think you could do better with some unappealing looking offal if you want to test yourself. I'll dig out a pic.

Herring ? In the old days Europe survived with the help of two fish , herring and cod .The Vikings had a big business selling cod through out Europe ! Dried it stored well .Herring can be preserved many ways , pickled, smoked etc, and of course cooked many ways .I was raised on fine foods like those .

slice it thin (around 10 slices in a can let's say) and fry it until brown/crispy. you can also then chop it up and mix with scrambled eggs and cook it in the leftover oil in the pan. don't eat it straight from the can!
