Anybody able to post a sketch or vid of how to start a Spanish braid stitch? I used to use it on my sheaths in the wayback, but can't for the life of me recall how to start it.

Is This?

Are these archived anywhere on here? If not, an archive of different stitches could prove invaluable. Especially more obscure stitches. You can find single and double running, single and double whip, and cobbler's twist double running stitch everywhere on the net. Any one can join 2 pieces of leather together but a decorative stitch really sets stuff apart.

If that's the same as the 'Mexican Braid,' I start mine in the third hole down, then come back to the first hole. It's a very 'full' braid taking up both the sides and top of the edge.

The Mexican or Round braid is a little different than what has been shown.I have a tutorial on my website under "Knife Info", also the Kingsmere tutorial is good.Dave :)
Here's an example of the Mexican or Rond braid

It can also be done in a two color lacing.I haven't done a tutorial on this style yet.It is pretty much the same with a different sequence.

That's the one I was talking about. I think it's the prettiest braid going, and if the project is thick enough to handle so much 'activity,' I always use it rather than any other!

Just that it takes A LOT of lacing....and I haven't perfected the splicing of it....yet....

I think the cheese would slide right off my cracker if I tried that. David, you sir are off your nut...<G>

It does take a lot! Between 9-10 times the overall length. And I have to use short pieces to keep it from looking too frayed. Usually about 2-3 feet long is the most I can get away with. But for splicing, I just cut the end of the lace at 45 degrees and use contact cement to put on the next section. If I cut at the correct location the splice gets buried inside the leather and doesn't get seen. My big problem comes at the corners. No matter what I do they always look ratty. :o

Getting the braid started is really the only problem most folks have. Once the first 3-4 stitches are done, the rest is just easy repetition. Corners need a slightly larger hole to accommodate several laceings going inside the same one, but the straight sections are pretty easy to do, and the results justify the time spent.
