after how bad I failed today, I am not giving any promises, but I would say that doing all but finish grinding before HT is probably a really good move.
After with a carbide mill and good files otherwise before. Also regardless of when I make the cuts and hole I always bring the area that will be the Spanish notch to a spring temper with a very soft flame on my smallest brazing torch tip, so it's not as hard as the blade and more flexible.
