For no reason other than curiosity: does anyone know if it's possible to make that nicely curved tip on the custom grinds using CNC machines? I'm just curious if that's a technical limitation that makes the production ones not quite as nice or if it's just a way to differentiate them.

Thanks, but they're different in that the production one has more of a straight line near the tip, where the hand-ground ones have a nice curved sweep.

Yes it is possible, but it would require 2 sets of grinding equipment. First a CNC hollow grinder for the main bevel and then a CNC flat grinder for the tip grinds.

I don't know if any outsourcing company actually owns both a CNC flat and a CNC hollowgrinder, so most likely it would require using 2 different blade grinding companies...

ah, i didn't realize that there was a difference in the grinds. and interesting CNC info. thanks to you both!

wait so are the production XM-18 blades sent out for CNCing or are they done in house? I thought everything was done in Rick's shop.

No,I believe they are outsourced.Makes no difference to me if they are made to Rick's specs on another man's CNC machine...
The edge still is done in house.

As long as the quality stays the same, I'd actually like Rick to outsource as much as he can, if it would help him produce more XM-24s so I could actually get my hands on one!
