Hi Folks
I am looking for a good knife with excellent steel. i was wondering if HC or D2 or the rest will strike a spark.
what knife and steel do you recomment on the knife
thanks.

but Ferrocerrium is all over the place. I've recently got into collecting different types of ferrocerrium sparking systems and the absolute best one (in my opinion) is the Blastmatch. It's a little pricier than the others, but the only other one that comes close is the Strike Force that's the same size, but requires both hands to operate.

Although I am no expert on the matter I can tell you what works for me.I bought a few military firesteels from Bagheera(you can do a search on here and get his e-mail address)and they work great. They come with a striker attached.I also use my Chris Reeves Mountaineer II knife as a striker sometimes. It has a false edge near the point that works well.It is made from A2 steel. This combo served me well this past weekend on a backpacking trip in the wilderness in very wet conditions.I have tried using other knives of various steels and found that stainless does not create a spark. Most of my carbon steel knives work as long as there is a good corner edge on the back side to strike with.Hope this is usefull.

I don't know what type of stainless you are using but every stainless steel knife I have will throw a spark just as good as carbon from the Swedish Fire Steels I have.

I've used sharp edged rocks, pieces of glass, pretty much anything with a relatively sharp edge on my FireSteels and they all work great. You don't even need to use metal at all with ferro rods...

Jeff,All I know is I have a knife being made from a local maker and I went to his place and tried it,it wouldn't throw sparks. Not sure what type steel it is.I have tried on a couple others that didn't work.Maybe I will test some others I own soon.

This is surprising, if yu are using a ferrocerium rod it should spark easily!!!!! With artifical flint like ferro it doesn't matter what your carbon content is in your striker- like said above, glass will work, so will sharp rocks, etc. Main thing is it should have a good edge, my keys or other dull strikers don't work so well.
Best to check your firestarter and make sure it is decent ferro-
Martin
