Sparklite failure...

I was packing up a new kit, and just happened to open up the OD Sparklite kit.

I looked at the top of the sparker, and noticed it had a white/gray powder on it, and that it was flared so that the two ears did not support the spark wheel. Fail.

The dark splotches in the background are the powder, which I figure is the disintigrated flint.

Has anyone else found the same thing? Have you checked yours recently??

I have two, but have not been in my psk lately. I am going to check today. Thanks for the heads up, Mike.
Also makes me wonder about striking the wheel when under stress. Could be easy to strike it hard enough to cause a failure of that type.

Interesting. Thank you for showing this.

Mine seem to be OK, but now I'm wondering about them, a little.

You should post this in the survival forum at Equipped to Survive. The manufacturer of sparklites is a regular on those forums (if I'm recalling correctly), and he might want to hear about this, or might have something informative to say.

FWIW, I have seen that type of flint failure posted here before. It was a while back so I doubt I could find the thread again.

To one and all. regarding the Spark-Lite. Approximately three years ago the company had a bad lot of Spark-Lites due to uncoated flint and oversized flint wheels. This problem has been corrected. If you have a non operational SL, please call (814 234-0698) or E mail me at o.norton@juno.com. I will replace the SL with two new ones plus throw in some extra tinder. Please give your phone number and address. Thank you, Oak

Contacted Oak, my Sparklite was replaced as promised.

Superb customer service.
