I lean towards sleeker/slicier blades so the Talos looks really good. But, for a collection it doesn't hurt to branch out. The Astor is definitely a heft of a knife at over 5 ounces, but that's why there's variety. Both have CTS-XHP blades, not really sure of that steel.

Overall what are your impressions of the budget Spartan line, and if you've used these two blades what do you think of them?

Whatever I may choose, I will probably also get a WE Banter. Seems like a cool and unique piece.

The Astor is a nice knife. Les George knows his ergos, and the fit, finish, and materials are on point for the price. It's "budget" only by Spartan standards, and not cheap-feeling in any way. If you're in the market for a solid 4-5 oz. liner lock, it's a good choice. :)

Talos is very nice but slightly smaller than a bugout and with a thicker but very pointy blade. I had to reprofile the handle for the ergos to work for me.

The Talos I purchased had severe lock-up issues right out of the box: the liner lock was at 80-90%. I returned it to the dealer and was shipped a second one with similar but less severe lock issues plus lock stick. This second Talos was also returned and exchanged for an Astor which has great fit and finish and has been totally reliable.

The Astor is by far the most comfortable folding knife I have ever held. The knife is beefy, but the blade is ground both strong and thin enough to cut, which is very rare. My Astor doesn't leave my flight suit, and is always with me at work.

The Talos is a great little knife, but for me it's a little bit more of a gentleman's folder. Its thin, lightweight, and very unobtrusive in the pocket. Overall, the ergos aren't the best for me, my fingers are just a little too big for the finger grooves in the saber grip, but it works really well in the pinch grip. It's still my go-to when I want a smaller locking folder.

As for my overall impressions of the Spartan Bronze Grade knives, they are definitely up to the standard you should expect from Spartan. They're made in Taiwan, and they're every bit the equal of other Taiwanese knives, like those made for Spyderco and Cold Steel.
