I'm trying to grind out the wavy grind lines and end up with a full convex.

Dang, man! Clean up yer room! :D

I love the Spartan, and my only complaint is the blade grind. I thought about re-grinding mine, but after studying the blade geometry for a while, I didn't even try it. Maybe I will after I see the results of your project.

I've ground a Boye-Detent into the lockbar on mine, and ground off the silly hump on top of the blade, but that's it.

I don't think a stock Spartan needs a Boye dent. To much work to close as is. That's why I cut a choil, so I can Spyder close it.

I agree - I only did it because the lockbar cutout in the scales is so deep. (I got the idea from the Kabar Mule.) When I take the Spartan down to chase the edges, I'll work the lock spring a little and try to make the effort to close the knife a little easier.

As much as I dislike recurve blade grinds, I really like how the Spartan cuts. Your choil idea sounds like another good mod I might try. Where do I send the nickel royalty? :)

Edited to add: the carbide rat PM'd me back in December about some of us starting a thread about mod'ing Spartans. I'll PM him back and maybe we can build on this one, if that's alright with you, Matt.

Not a prob! Have at it. Hopefully Nternal will ship me his Spartan soon for a clip point Bowie regrind.

Also, make sure you cut the Choil further than I did. I got myself good so I'm extending mine.

looks like the cold steel voyager series. Why did you buy a spartan if you wanted a cold steel voyager?

I like the wave hook and steel liners. Thick blade is a plus.

When you press the lock release and snap the knife downward motion so that the choil land on your trigger finger.

Thanks... But why it's associated with Spyderco? Which model gets associated with the term?
My apology, this is going off topic .. :o

On topic: it does look very cool! Mirroring it full helps to reduce drag I guess?

Pretty much every Spyderco lockback has sufficient choil to land safely on your finger when you close it how I explained.
