Spartan, will it really do what I want it to do?

Hi everyone!
I have never bought a Cold Steel knife before, don't have any real excuses why? Just haven't. However, lately I have been wanting a knife to throw in my hiking bag that can always stay in there. I usually hike with a larger fixed blade strapped to the straps, but I have gotten stares on crowded trails, or family friendly ones, and have been asked to remove it in certain situations. I want something large and folding for "just in case" I get stuck moments. In my bag generally I have a compass, flint, some homemade matches, a wood stove, tubing and a cable tie (look up water filter using a tree branch), and an emergency blanket. I do this because I hike often and find myself in rugged terrain, I just want to be prepared ya know?
Anywho, seen some amazing videos about the Spartan wow...they make it look invincible. If I did happen to get stuck overnight I would want something I could maybe baton with, make kindling, some self defense, skinning if needs be etc. Does anyone else have one for this purpose? Or used it for this purpose? Have I made the right choice? Again, I hike literally daily, sometimes in crowded trail places so I just want to avoid a fixed blade.
Thanks all.

The Tri-ad lock on the Spartan and its siblings is probably the strongest lock you can buy. So if you are going to baton with a folder, a Cold Steel product might be your best bet. See this Nutnfancy video starting at around 16:00. It's not a Spartan, but its the same lock.

For your requests, I'd think the Rajah 2 might be more in line with what you want. It has a longer blade, and would be a better batoning knife than the Spartan would, I think...it's also got enough overall length than you could basically use it as a mini machete in an outdoors situation.

I have owned my Spartan for about 4 years. It is my secondary EDC blade. My primary EDC is a Rajah 2. The Spartan is a very durable blade. I am a construction worker and both of my blade see hard use daily. As DShiflet said, the Rajah 2 would be better for batoning. The only down side, is recurve blades, like the Spartan, require a little skill when it comes to sharpening. You will not be disappointed with the Spartan.

I have a heavily modded Spartan, but also want to get one of the stonewashed flavors eventually.

The Rajah didn't feel as good in my hand, I did consider it though! I also don't like how HUGE the Rajah appears, whereas the Spartan is just big. The ark of the blade was moreso also. I just wanted to see if anyone else loved theirs really before I bit the bullet and got it.

I dont use it for that purpose, but I can say its a stout design and heavy duty.

I don't recommend batoning with any knife, but if you're going to do it, use a fixed blade with a thick full tang. The Tri-Ad lock can handle it, but it's definitely not ideal.

The Voyager XL in clip point is probably a better option. It has a full flat grind compared to the Spartan's hollow grind for better slicing, and the blade is much easier to keep sharp.

It shows about as much as the Spartan when in your pocket.

I carry a Spartan, but I don't carry it for general utility, that's what I carry a Tuff Lite for.

I think this is the correct answer.

I've batoned an american lawman and it held up great. I was even using a 4lb single jack.

I know you want a folder, how about a folding saw? They're light weight, and fit in a pack. The spartan can ride in your pocket. There's plenty of folks here that carry them everyday.

+1 for this.

I love my spartan it's done more than any folding knife should . I've pryed with it on house doors car doors beat it beyond belief it's a tank. I also have the rajah 2 I've used it less but I use it for clearing paths to fishing spots and have done a few over night trips with it, it handled batoning and camp chores just fine. I'd say your good either way.
