I went to George's last week and tried my hand at canister welding. I really liked the results and am now wondering about doing at home...one problem, no press. Can you do canister work with a hammer and Litle Giant? I've never heard of can work without a press.

Hey, HammerHead and I are going to pick out a I beam for the press that we are going to build him today. Do you want us to pick you out one too. It will be a bitch bring back home on the roof of your car.  That would be a 4 to 5 day visit to build it.:D :D

IG, it is sure a good thing you look after J.! With J.'s luck, they would drop it on top of his car! Say, how about a pic of that press?

If you guys don't mind hauling it back to your place and storing it, I'd love that. I'll have to bring alot more "fuel" for that visit. Budweiser, right?
:D

J I havent tried it with the power hammer but I sold mine when my press was finished. Keeping the can square will be the biggest problem. If you cant keep it square the pattern will be distorted. The press dies are unlimited and can be changed in seconds where the little giant is limited to a combination die only

i can't see why not. might as well take enough steel for the both of us. i'll store it at my place untill the next time you get up here. when do you think you'll be coming so i can know when to get it to my house?

IG, you build the coolest stuff but you got to slow down a bit. I'm still gathering up parts to make my surface grinder and then I can start on the hydrolic press...What size I beam did you use? How many tons are you going?
My local junk yard just got a bunch I and H beams in that I've been looking over. I was going to build an H style press but the single beam (C press?) looks like a simpler build.

IG, cool stuff is right! And thanks for the pictures, also. It pretty much tells the whole story. Nice work, George! You are a pretty handy guy, so good I would feel ashamed to make another crack about your rocket fuel low temp relish, or the HOT det-cord grade.

Tracy: The I beam we picked out was around a W12X72= depth 12.25,flange@ width 12.04, thick .670 and the web @.430
John: My HT'g relish you can't knock it until you try it.

IG what's the cost on the I beam ?
I'm going to use this new 8HP honda I got. but I want to go
a min of 40 ton. (if I can do it)..with a combo rolling mill.
all portable for the Hammer-ins
:D

Hey Mike, no rush. I probably won't be able to get back up that way till after the holidays. I really appreciate the beam. Send me a note and we'll talk about a swap.

hey Dan i might be able to get you a nice sized one .... let me know what size you need and i'll check with my friend. If he has a spare piece i'll have him put it aside for you. Price will be the cost of gas for you to come pick it up.

Thanks alot
your a great guy no matter what IG says :D

It's going to depend on the cylinder length
but I want to keep it under 5'
hopefully less than 4'
the piston throw need not be more than 6" max..
I'd say 5' would do it :)

oh edited too add

a 10" or 12" I
should do it I'd think??
or would H beam be stronger?

i'm going to get the beam tomorrow, so i'll measure the lengths and see cut a piece for you and J. you might want to go over the onnage and beam size with IG. he's got a whole load of info on "regulation" sizes and safetly ratings.... although his is rated at 50% safe and with all the work put through it not problems yet. so your best bet is to ask him and when you figure it out tell him to let me know what you need.
I'm sure all the stuff IG says about me is good. in his own twisted sense of thinking
