Hey guys, just wanted to share some shots of this integral I made for the ABS Expo in San Antonio. This is the first knife out of my new shop as well. :) Sorry the pics are worse than my normal mediocre ones, but my light tent and card reader for the Sony camera burned up at my folks'.... so these were just shot on the workbench.

Thanks for looking... If you're going to be in San Anton, please stop by and say hello :)

Ladder pattern 1084/15N20
Line cut and fluted bolster
KILLER Ironwood :)
Domed 416 ss pin

I took a handful of snapshots while working on it, but I have another knife to finish for the show, so I don't have time to edit, upload, and post them right now.

Questions, comments....? Fire away. ;) :)

That is a handsome knife there Mr. Wheeler. You do some fine work. Love the patterns in that damascus.

Were you going to just leave it machine finish like that? :p

Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks guys! :)

Carl, you caught me! That's actually not a pattern in the steel, it's just 36 grit scratches in the blade. ;) :p

Somehow I forgot to mention WHERE I got the Ironwood.... Yep, that's right, Mark at BurlSource! :)

Okay, lunch break is over... Thanks guys! :)

Really wish I could get down there again this year. Unfortunately, we're tooling up to move in several weeks, and my wife would kill me if I left her and the boy alone for the weekend as busy as we've been. Have a great show!

Oh, and the knife is ok, too. ;) :D

We love you Nick Wheeler

I have a question about the bolster grooves.

I think you likely used a round file in the centre.

I have a question about the two thinner, deeper grooves.

My first thought is a milling machine and slit saw, but then can`t see how you would have held it.

hacksaw, but then difficult to keep straight and even

Can you make me any smarter ?

Sam, Nick did a tuto a while back about this. Your search FU is better than mine.

Oh yes I love the knife too. ;)

Nick I don't think that is up too your normal standards, send it too me and I will keep it for a while and see how it preforms!:D

Seriously that is freaaaakin awsome!:thumbup: even with the unedited photos:rolleyes::cool:

Good question!!! :) With spacers I can just cut them with my Foredom, a thin disc, and a little V-block table I made. For a stick tang integral, you have a tang in the way on one side of the bolster, and the blade adding weight and height on the other. You could mount the blade to a large block and use a larger diameter slitting saw, but it would have to be hand maneuvered.

These photos show how I've done the last couple. The key is a little doo-dad to start the cut and get it straight in the beginning. Then cut them deeper. The hacksaw blade was surface ground down to 0.025"

Don't drink a lot of coffee and try to do this!!! ;)

I came up with what I think is a better way, but I want to try it some more before I show anyone.

The doo-dad is just a small block with a shoulder milled on it, so it will ride against the shoulder of the bolster.

The round groove was cut with a 3/16 chainsaw file.

Amazing piece of craftsmanship Nick. Thanks for posting pics.

Super slick, Nick. You're getting really good at that tight ladder pattern. It would be fun to play with the light on that blade in person.

San Antonio, eh? Since you're a WA guy are you going to be at the OKCA show in April? I would love to see some of your work in person!

Beautiful blade, Brother; that ladder looks phenomenal!
