Here are the pics of the 15" Sher AK I got last week. During the weekend I used it to remove a massive cedar shrub/tree at my mother's place, and then chop up the tree.

I can see a lot of potential here, and I really like the feeling of indestructibleness and uniqueness this blade has. However, I need to figure out how to sharpen it, and then how to use it properly. It's pretty dull right now, and the chopping performance so far just isn't anywhere near what other people are experiencing. :( I blame it on my own inexperience.

ps - the accessory knives probably look a bit odd at the moment. I'm in the middle of experimenting on both of them. I'll let you know how my plans turn out.

Congratulations. It is beautiful.

On chopping with a 15inch AK:

Don't think of it as a hatchet. Don't hold your wrist rigid; rather, let it be a pivot point so that your arm, then wrist, then (if you choose) your forefinger and thumb swivel so that the end result is like cracking whip, with the blade being the end of the whip.

Read the safety thread.

If you try to sharpen it enough, you will sharpen it. Others who know how will also help here.

What Kismet said, except use both systems as conditions apply; set wrist or snap wrist.

I've still an unfinished theory the hanshee is supposed to be snapped like a whip.

Well, 'snap' is the wrong word; but loose as in moving rope is the idea.

thanks for the tips on handling, kismet. I'll have to give it a go this weekend sometime.

I'm also looking forward to a full-size GRS I picked up from Norm... 21" 41oz :D

on another note, I seem to have blooded my kharda... ouch :(

yeah, I just poked myself when I was holding something wrong. :(

I'll take it as a good reminder to not be an idiot with a knife.

I think that full size GRS is going to chop like crazy. I've got a CAK which chops good, but when I got my 18" GRS the difference was amazing. Yours is even bigger and your AK is smaller. You'll be happy as an elf. You know what this means...more khuks.

Just got back from a nice winter walk. It's about -12C out, and I suspect the trees are a bit stiffer because of it. Nonetheless, I got in a spot of limbing/chopping in. I think I'm getting the hang of it -- doing much better than I was last week. :D

I'm expecting to get my GRS before wednesday...

A 15" AK by Sher is an excellent knife- how heavy? Some are light, some are tanks.

I just got a light weight 18" AK, and am liking it a lot.

"18 inch 25 ounce villager Ang Khola by Bura. Hot pepper wood (Khorsani ko Kath) handle." That is a magic zone- 25 oz., 18"

Nice pix Kazeryu- if you can't get the mirror polish back, a green scotchbrite pad will give it a nice matte finish.

as previously mentioned, I don't have a scale that I can measure it with. I'm not planning on worrying about the finish on the blade for now -- I plan to learn with and use this one.

I am sort of interested in finishing the handle a little bit. The climate here is pretty nuts, we literally go from -40C to +40C (-40F to 105F) and we get snow, rain, drought, the works. No tornados or hurricanes, though, so there's nothing to really fear from the weather. But thinking about the climate variation makes me think that the wood handle could use some protection. I really don't know jack about finishing wood, so I've been looking at some of the previous threads.
For now I've rubbed the handle with a little bit of mineral oil cut with clove oil -- some stuff I got along with my katana earlier this year.
