Best way to sharpen a spear blade GEC knife? Can I use a diamond rod? I have no expensive system. Just a rod and some stones. Obviously can buy something reasonably priced

There is nothing complicated about sharpening a spear point blade. Use whatever method you are comfortable with. Both your diamond rod, or your stones should work fine. If I was sharpening it. I would use my Hapstone V8, with some diamond plates; because that is what I am comfortable with. You won't need diamonds for your GEC. Diamonds are what I have, and they work on anything.

You may have to do some reprofilling the first time you sharpen it. My experience with GEC is limited, but the one I have, has some really wonky angles. 35 degrees on one side of the blade, 30 degrees on the other.

GEC mostly uses 1095 steel - any stone should handle that. Even a cheap $6 aluminum oxide stone will do just fine.
It's probably easier to be consistent from belly to tip on a stone than a rod.
Also, diamond is a bit of overkill on 1095. It works, but it's very aggressive. To me it feels like dragging heavy clay through gravel.
