I was doing some woods bumming with my son this weekend, and decided to bring along a new blade- the Cold Steel Bushman.

I picked up this inexpensive knife recently because I was intrigued with the prospect of rigging up a spear and, well, chucking it.:D

While we were hanging out my son started whittling a branch to fit the Bushman. It was way too heavy. I would have gone with something lighter, but he was proud of his work, so we rigged it up with a kitchen hook screw I brought along.

Here is the finished product. To give you an idea of the length, I'm 6' tall.

The rig was really heavy and it was akin to throwing a shot-put vs. a softball.

Here is the wind up:

And the throw:

I was about 10 yards the target (a large maple tree) and with all that heft, the spear really went in deep.

I've never used a spear before, but it sure was a lot of fun. I had no problem with accuracy and was able to hit the target every time. If someone wanted to try hunting like this, a lighter shaft would have to be used for a quicker throw.

I'm planning to try this again soon with a lighter shaft and a more challenging target.

The knife was only used as a spear, so I can't comment on its overall function, but the tip held up well with no deformation of any kind.

Sorry for the bad quality pictures, but my photography seemed to be a bit off this weekend.

I broke my Bushman at the seam doing this so be careful.
Don't make the shaft too heavy and make sure the tip of the spear doesn't fit too snugly in the socket.

Beanbag that looks like some great fun! Let me ask you, Did you cut that pole to a specific length or just what looked about right?

It was a blast! I didn't realize I had the makings of a Jr. Bushman until I just got out there and starting doing that "Spear Chucker Jones" thing.:D

Regarding the length, I just approximated the Bushman logo on the side of the blade. Lol.

Cool, so it comes with instructions.

Did it break on the first couple throws? interested.

got to love the bushman.

Beanbag, looks like fun. I bet the heavy shaft could be useful for hunting if you found a tree to perch in next to a game trail (like a bow hunter), let gravity do all the work!

Dipbait, is that the bowie style bushman? I've thought that their tips looked a bit more robust (but it sounds like people are happy with their original bushmen).

It's a fun knife. I keep it tucked in my laptop bag so I have a reasonably tough fixed blade with me when I'm without my usual go-bag.:thumbup:

Yeah,I bought the Bowie . I got one so to could reach Oyster and Chicken of the Woods mushrooms up high in the trees. Havent found any since the purchase.

that's cool, Beanbag. I think a little spear-chunkin' fun is in order on my next outing. why not? :)

got to love the bushman.

Did fine on the first light test throws, but broke on the first real chuck.

I made the tip of the shaft fit as snugly in the socket as I could so I wouldn't have to use a nail or pin. I guess the momentum of the shaft pushing on the handle forced it apart until it broke at the weld.

The knife still works fine, and I can't fault anyone but myself for "breaking" it.
