Funny you should ask. This afternoon, I found a particularly straight and strong piece of hardwood and started carving a spear handle. Do an online search for spear heads and you can find Cold Steel offerings as well as designs based on Viking and Celtic spears. The shaft I'm carving on is 7 feet long and will make a near 8 foot spear. Not sure what I'll use it for, lol!

For throwing look for a short and narrow blade, as it will hold up better under repeated use. For a cut-and-thrust spear I suggest the Windlass Steelcrafts "hewing spear."

100eyes: i have looked at their spears and they look pretty good for what i'd be using them for, and no unlike most here i have no personal problem with them.
frisky: awesome! i hope your spear shaft turns out great! and thanks i'll use my google-fu now and check em out
fortytwoblades: thank you for the tip! i thought that would be a good idea to have a shorter and narrow blade. but a question though, wouldnt a wider blade hold up better because of the shock being transmitted over a wider area?
