I read about the military knifethrowing style where you hurl a knife with no spin or quarter spin...can someone provide a good tutorial with maybe a few tips about knife selection? Youtube's been no help. Would I be able to use plain-as-day, shopping mall throwing knives for this?

Thank you!

I thought they shoot guns in the military....well since we are going back to throwing knives then I figure. As a side note I would NEVER use shopping mall throwing knives for anything, well maybe a door stop. As for which knife you want the main thing is to make sure it is balanced properly. Some people/techniques prefer tip heavy others prefer hilt heavy. That be it aside I have not heard of any technique with out the knife rotating in air.

Welcome to BF.

Mmmmhh... sounds like you're describing Ralph Thorn's combat throwing method. It's not military, but oriented for throwing the knife (or other objects) as a weapon.

Ralph himself posts here fairly often. I will let him describe the knives he recommends, although I can tell you that while you would be able to use most any knife (or many other objects) as they are, he recommends some modifications to basic blades to help in learning the technique.

There are free clips of both my videos online. Probably what you would like to see is the Paladin Press clip, which is at their website and on youtube. Do a search for their name and/or Ralph Thorn, knife throwing....

on you tube its under combat knife throwing paladin press. this is a very good way to throw. the hardest part for me was learning to wipe finger down spine of knife on release.once you get that down you will be throwing like a pro. personally i think it is easier to learn with a large knife that has some weight. for me small knives were hard at first. any way have fun

I would recommend a knife that is at least 9" long and 0.156" thick for no-spin.

If you check out the "links" page on my website, you'll find some youtube vids that should be helpful.

I have fiddled with the no spin throw. I got decent results out to about 12-15 feet. I have thrown a knife on an off for 20 years. I think I would get better results with a no spin throw with a different knife. I fool around with a GI tanto from Cold Steel. Not the heaviest longest knife for dedicated throwing.

Growing up I threw a WWII bayonet and could stick that knife into the target out to 55 feet almost every time. But I spent a really long time with that knife. And knew exactly where to do a blade throw or handle throw, and how much "English" to put on it to make it stick in the in between areas. That knife has a 12 inch blade, and is very very handle heavy.

You may also want to look into throwing hawks. They are very easy for most to learn to stick well. I can stick mine out to 60 feet pretty reliably.

Good fun!

Buy some high carbon, spring steel. I really like thicker heavier blades. Longer and more weight means slower spin if you are throwing spin.

There is a you tube that shows a Russian "master" of the no spin technique around if you look for it. It's pretty impressive. I have not been able to pull it off consistently yet but ever hopeful.
