Spearpoint or Tanto

Thanks everyone for your help up til now. I still can't decide whether to get a spearpoint or tanto point folder. Which do you prefer and why?

You really cant make an intelligent recommendation unless you know what jobs the knife will be used for. Give us a hint.

Sam,
If your looking to stab, puncture, use as a pry bar, or you just plain like the rugged Japanese influenced style, then the Tanto is for you.
Tanto's are tough!!!!!! Period!!!!!

But, if your looking for an ALL around blade that, IMHO looks even better than a Tanto, and you know that you will not be puncturing car doors or prying with it, then go for the Spearpoint.

I may be alone on this but, I don't much care for "fads". I think that the Tanto falls into that category. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to knives. I also prefer stag, bone, MOP, and wood over synthetic handles.

Just my .02. Take it for what YOU think it's worth.

Is there a reason that you are restricting yourself to those two choices? For all around use the spear point is a better choice, in my opinion. The clip and drop point are also better.
Keith.

Sorry, guess I should have gone into more detail. I wrote in earlier posts that I was considering the Camillus CUDA folder with the button/slide. I didn't get many opinions on my choice, but the ones I did were positive. Those are the two blade types for this knife. What is a "Clip-Point Voyager"? My decision is not chiseled in stone yet, it just appeared like a fairly easy way to employ the blade, and I like the looks of it. I am a total novice where knives are concerned and will appreciate any and all input. Thanks for your help.

Thanks Anthony. What do you think of the quality of the Camillus CUDA, and CRKT knives? Sometimes I feel like I'm trying to ask too many questions at once, but otherwise I'd end up with 100 topics.

First of all, if you don't have a training then it doesn't really matter what blade type do you use, but let's not start another political thread.

To answer your question, am with other guys. Tanto is great for stabbing. But for slashes you'll get more out of a blade that has some curve to it. And it doesn't mean that your spearpoint wouldn't stab...

In general a curved blade (i.e. spearpoint, drop point, etc.) cuts much better than a straight edge often present in CQB "american tanto" knives.

That's why a spearpoint might not only be better for defense but also for other things that happen more often than a need to "defend" yourself.

To each their own. MHO is that the spear point is the most attractive design overall. YMMV, and I'm sure it will. The only practical use I've found for the single Tanto blade I own is cutting the little hangy root thingies off green onions. Once you flub up the first resharpening of a Tanto, it's pretty much all over for it.

For all around use, I'm a firm believer in the drop point. The spear point offers pretty much the same belly as the drop point.

The "Americanized" Tanto is one hell of a "fad" at 20 plus years old!

As for "Defensive Use," two areas to consider.

Don't listen to people that tell you that you are doomed.

Don't listen to people that tell you that you are not doomed.

That applies to calling 911, running away, giving the person the money they are robbing you for, laying down and allowing them to violate you, breaking into your house, carjacking you, sticks, batons, pepper spray, chains, thrown cats, protection K-9s, knives, swords, and every type of gun you can imagine.

I think that in order to defend yourself with a knife, that is a far more simple endeavor that to learn to "Knifefight," which does take some instruction. Alot of people that receive instruction don't even practice drawing their weapon, which means they are going to croak. Getting the weapon out fluidly is the number one skill you can acquire before you even seek out instruction in actually using it.

This is all about options and "insurance," there are no guarantees no matter what you do or what you carry or how skilled you are with it, you might die anyway.

Some people don't like the idea of knives for Self-defense, they are entitled to their opinion, it is not one I agree with, however.

Have a nice day.

And the same goes for a knife...

Great quote Don,

.

I totally believe in self defense though.

Don, I agree with you wholeheartedly! I have owned firearms since I was eight yrs. old, but never realized how much I didn't know til I took a defensive pistol class at the Front Site Academy. I'll never be a Col. Jeff Cooper, but the training sure opened my eyes and made a difference.

Sam, buy what you like, but as for me I don't carry a knife as a weapon and No Tantos for me Tonto. But then I'm not a Ninja wannabee.

Spearpoint, clip point, wharncliff and dagger are all more practical shaped blades.

I think the Camillus one handers are nice but they have weak detents on their liner locks and can open in your pocket. Check the ball detent on the liner lock before you buy one. CKRT has a wide range of knives. All are well made but some use slightly less hightech material like AUS-6 blade steel. Check the individual CKRT to see if it is what you want.

Anthony, If I'm ordering the knife by mail I can't look at them first, but I guess I can always return it if I'm not happy.
Phil, I don't wanna be a ninja either. Guess I'll just have to settle for warrior. Ninjas, spec ops, commandos, etc. have to do all that crawling in the mud, eat bugs and stuff.

Thanks for the input guys.

Don,
The "Americanized" Tanto being around for 20 plus years.
Is that in reference to folders, as being discussed here in this thread, or in general (I.E. swords & fixed blades)??

Just wondering, in case I missed something.
