Well OK I can promise you'll never find my huntin knife strapped to a stick, but why not an actual spearhead? I have been toying with the idea for a while and it makes sense to me. I am thinking of something a little more effective than a pointy stick. I made up a point that could be carried in a pack or even used as a belt knife but is tempered more for toughness than edge holding. Carry it to camp, then find a suitable shaft. I made it from 3/16 1084. The edge is left a little thick for durability. The width of the tang tapers from pommel to the hilt. If the shaft is cut to match the head it shouldn't pull out from the shaft. If the handle is wrapped. it makes a descent belt knife although it's not perfect. What do you folks think of the concept?

I like the concept. I have just started thinking of something like this thanks to someone on the Camillus forum(can't remember your name, but thanks for the idea). He mentioned using a Becker as a spear head. Take the handles off, and attach it to a pole. I think the Crewman might good for this. Seems about the right size and is the cheapest, but still a good knife. I would probably carry it with out the handles, with the intent to use on a spear (or backup knife). Of course I would have another main knife along with the Becker. I do like the spear head you made.

Hey,
Cold steel makes spears as well as the bushman knife which has a round hollow type handle that one can make a spear out of... it's even got a little screw hole to secure the knife to the stick.

Bill, I think that it is a great idea. When I saw the Hoffman/Hossom Harpoon, the idea grows more and more with me. The knife/spear blade is awesome.

I completely forgot about the bushman, still don't have one of those to play with:D.

Hey Bill, could you please give the specs of the blade(overall length, blade length, and width of the blade), I don't know how long your ruler is(6"?). I really like the design you came up with. Especially tempering it more for a spear than knife and having a thick edge on it. Sounds like something that would be a good companion to one of my khukuris.

Well the specs are 10.5 overall with a 6inch blade. The blade is 1.375 wide and 3/16 thick. John I will be at the show. I have a table this year too(U8) I look foward to seeing you there.

Bill,

I like the idea and I love the blade you came up with. Personally I would round the back edges of the handle so they don't tear up your hand when using it as a knife.

I still have a hard time coming up with a scenario in which I would have to use a spear for something other than fish. Here in Brazil you can run into wild boar but when you do you may hit into a group of 20 or more. Mac

the back end has rounded off corners and all the corners on the handle have been rounded. The only sharp edge is the cutting edge. I agree that uses for a spear are fairly limited but it is an easy weapon to devise. A lot of folks ask about em so I just went off a "what if" kinda thought. Personally I like having one around camp cause it is something I can build while watching the fire :)

Bill,

How is this balanced? Can your spear double as a throwing knife?

n2s

I haven't thrown it but it feels like it would make a couple nice spins :) Throwing could add to it's usefulness in camp as an entertainment source. For a throwing weapon though I'd prefer something along the lines of 2 pointed sticks tied into a cross. They are easy to make and with 4 points yer odds are better too.
