Well, forgive me if i'm wrong but this seems to be the "other weapons" forum as well.

I've recently been on a spear kick. I recently purchased the Cold Steel boar spear. It's been a fun piece, great multi use tool actually. It slashes well enough for minor brush clearing and takes a mean edge.

Anyway, I've been wondering if any of you all had experience with any spears? I think the next one on my list is the windlass large leaf blade spear. Looking for something more traditional that fits my celtic/norse heritage.

So, spear show and tell? I'll try and get some pics of my spear up if the thread is well received!

QC is good? does it take a good edge? do you know?

I cant find anything wrong with it at all. I haven't even had to sharpen it the edge is sharp enough for a throwing or thrusting weapon. A hewing spear you might have to sharpen. I have thrown it and it sticks just fine cardboard and Hay bales don't stand a chance. ;)

Glad to hear it! last time hay bales came raiding our homestead i had to fight them off with a sharpened stick, it was tiring work!

I've got the Cold Steel spears and a small custom head I had made ( it's buried in a rucksack). Yes, I do spears. The spear is a kick ass weapon. Can be great fun. Another skill my daughters learned / played with growing up.

I love spears myself, but I don't own any yet. However I really want one of those Cold Steel boar spears.

I'm curious about the head though. If you order just the head and not the shaft, what can you do with it? Can it be used like a short sword? Or does the hollow shaft prevent this kind of improvisation?

I'll post pics of my Boar spear Charlie_K! Give me a bit and i'll get some up. Guess it's time to make a photo bucket.

The head is one sided as you'll see. it's stamped out of a flat piece then rolled to make the socket basically. it's plenty strong however and slashes fine i use it as a brush clearer and it works great. However, when wielding just the head. the cross piece makes it very awkward to hold and it can hit your wrist semi painfully. If you want a improvised short sword i suggest the Assegai head, it's not as big, but it doesn't have the cross piece.

I have two 19th century spontoons, two hunting darts about 5 ft long with 5"points, a cold steel bushman on a shift and my favorite is the Cold Steel assegai.

I've got a Windlass Hewing Spear on an oval teak shaft. It's in storage right now, though, so no pics--sorry! :D

Got my pics uploaded! CS Boar Spear coming right up!

The head comes with screws but as with the tomahawks, once you have the haft properly fitted it fits great. I bang on stuff and slash with it all the time and it hasn't loosened in awhile.

I see what you mean about the design. Having only seen it from the front, you'd never guess that its design is like a Bushman on steroids.

I have a Cold steel boar spear and the same Windlass Viking spear as Legion12. I also have a CS Samburu spear. The CS spear head took some work to get it fitted correctly on the shaft but its very tough and can take a good beating. The Windlass spear head I installed on my own shaft with the matching butt plate and it makes a nice show piece or working spear. Good quality steel. I will post some photos when I can.

Is that a celtic sword there on the left. It looks like a gen 2 sword and I have been looking at that sword for some time. If that is what it is please give more info. Fit finish, weight, balance, durability what have you cut with it have you had to sharpen it and if so how l ok ng did the edge last

If that's the one I think it is, I read it being reviewed on the Sword Buyer's Guide. Balance is a bit forward heavy, but it cut through a thick tree limb with ease.

The Celtic sword you see in the stand was made by Hanwei. The sword has an anthropomorphic hilt and typical Celtic leaf-shaped blade made of carbon steel of course. It has solid brass hardware, Macassar ebony wood grip and decently constructed leather scabbard. On this Hanwei sword the round wood grip is rather thin so large handed guys may not be comfortable with it. The steel takes and holds a decent edge and it cuts light fodder pretty well. The balance is a bit forward heavy on this sword. I think that is typical for the Celtic leaf blade pattern swords since I have also handled the Gen 2 model and its handling characteristics are similar to the Hanwei blade.

Specifications:

Overall Length: 29 1/2"
Weight: 3lb
Handle Length: 7 1/4"
Blade Length: 23"

I have the windlass hewing spear kinda disappointed in the quality. crooked bent dull spot welds in the socket looked like a drunk monkey made them but the iking spear above looks nice I might have 2 have one.
