I'm in the market for a spec bump, and have seen two different g10 handle textures on the web. Can anyone tell me which one is the current handle and when they changed? Thanks.

They changed very early on when they went to S30V steel.

This is the current Spec Bump's handle. I think the design is called starburst.

I prefer the first gen's design myself.

My pleasure.

I've been thinking about buying a spec bump and a speed bump and swapping out the blades and selling the speed bump as like...a super speed bump or something (since it'll have the S30V). I really don't like black blades....but I do love the spec bump. Oh well, already blew 120 on Kershaw tonight, I guess it can wait.

Maybe down the road I can find a forum member who wants a super speed bump and will do a swap with me.

AM, Keep your peepers peeled. Speed/Specs turn up from time to time. You get the old G10, old lock stud, and a bead blasted 13C26 blade. However, if you decide to franken mod one shoot me an email and I'd gladly help you out :D:thumbup:

Awesome. It's quite possible I'll take you up on that in the future. I just bought a G10 Offset though and a Tyrade is probably on the way so my Kershaw supply is strong enough at the moment.

Man, I'd love a plain blade Spec Bump. I do like the starburst design, but the old handle is so much more subtle. I got to play with the original Spec Bump when they first came out (154CM/black blade) and was blown away. I had a couple Kershaws back then, but that's the first time I like, just had to have one. I ended up liking it so much that I bought a Ti Bump.

Artfully, you mean like this. I did it and it works perfect.

Have you thought of simply re-finishing the S30V blade. I would kind of like to get my hands on and S30V blade, hand rub the blade to 400x, and make some nice handles (blackwood would look good) for a sort of super Spec Bump.

The thought has occurred to me more than once, but I always feel bad about permanently changing a knife. I'm weird like that.

Bought me a spec bump today. Its one of the early ones with CPM 154 steel, new in the box for $105. Any advantages or disadvantages to one with this steel? Its dated Nov. 05.

The handles are less aggressive and the steel is a little different. The CPM154 seems to sharpen a bit easier than S30V. The only major advantage to the older ones is the thumb stud. I think the stud on these moves a little more naturally and I prefer the way it feels under the thumb. The older Specs are much more rare.

Oh, and I just picked up one for 65 LNNB.....:p:D
