Few days ago I got my Spec Elite I and I love it! I didn't expect such smooth and elegant knife, I'd say that pictures on SOG web don't do justice to this awesome piece. The blade has very slight horizontal play, which I hope to correct by tightening the main pivot. Other than that it's really cool knife for the money and I sure will use it as my EDC for some time.To anyone considering buying it - I say go for it! And a question - is there any way of determining whether I have newer version with VG10 steel, or the older with AUS8 ? I bought it on ebay where the seller stated it's AUS8, so I its' a safe bet he would say it has VG10 if it did, but maybe he was using obsolete info or something... Blade isn't stamped with steel type as I thought it would be, it only says "SpecElite /TM" and "Seki Japan" on one side and SOG log on the other side. Any hints on this?

Thanks for reading, take care

I am also interested in getting the Spec Elite I. Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, there is no way to tell which steel is used

I agree! As I said, I was pleasantly surprised by this knife. I was thinking about buying that new Visionary too, but it has somewhat strange handle, spec elite looks a lot better IMHO.

Take care

Greetings all!

I just joined the forum recently and I have the Spec Elite I as well. I like it and was using it as my DC untill yesterday when I got a great deal on a Benchmade Apparition.
The Benchmade is a bit on the heavy side but it's built like a tank and opens faster than any other assisted I've tried.
The SOG is a great quality knife and you will enjoy it regardless of which blade you have. The lock is smooth and reliable and opens and closes lightning fast once you get the hang of it. It has retained a good edge after daily use of box cutting etc. Although I wasn't sure about it at first, I've also found that the handle is pretty much bullet proof and has stood up to multiple drops and getting thrown around.
All in all two thumbs up from me as well!

I have the Pentagon Elite II and want a Spec Elite I or II (have not desided yet). Nice knives to be sure. They sure are fun to play with and they make great users. I can flick mine open and closed. :) It's adicting. lol. Enjoy them and thanks for posting.

There's a fairly heavy performance gap between AUS8 and VG-10; you should figure out pretty quickly which one you have.
