Hi Fellas,As you can tell I am interested in a SOG Spec-Elite I.
I really like the looks of it,but because of the negative vibe in the SOG forums,
I am some what hesitant to purchase a Sog product.
Sure I have Spidies and Benchmade knives, but would like to try on a new line of knives. What concerns me is that the only thread here, that has the most posts is, What can SOG do to get on top again? This says that your not pleased with the product. So my question is, why do you purchase them? If your not happy with them, wouldn't it be prudent to try another brand?
Are there any true, hard core SOG fans out there? And if so, why?
It would be great to see some positive threads, for a change. :D

Peace,

dave

I'd say SOG as a company isn't as communicative here on bladeforums as i.e. Spyderco with Mr. Glesser, but they make very nice knives IMHO. I own the Spec Elite I and Vulcan, they are both good value for the money, with the weak point being the pocket clip and very minor F&F issues (both knives have a slight bladeplay, but the same can be said about my Spydercos and others). I am surprised that the SOG Vulcan isn't more popular around here, it's very cool looking and functional knife loaded with great features. I have no problems buying SOG knives and will buy them in future. So should you :D

pafka: Thanks for the reply, yes I was debating between the Spec-Elite I
and the Vulcan. Knowing my knife addiction I would most likely end up with both, within a week or so of each other anyway ;)

I have the pentagon elite 2 which donated the handle and lock to the spec, and I'll probly pick up a spec at some point. Very solid, any blade play was taken up with a minor tighten of the pivot screw, and it still "flips" quite nicely.
SOG makes good knives, its just that the hard core fans would like them to be better, and maybe there is a bit of fear that they may go down the path of another company, and have cheap crap, and super expensive stuff all under the same name and marketing.

I think that post about "What can SOG do to get on top again" was written for the poster to show off his own ideas, having nothing to do with how successful SOG is in selling their current products. I remember when reading it I was thinking he wasn't really addressing SOG, his suggestions weren't particularly relevent to their line.

I've gotten to the point where it's hard for me to justify adding another big knife or another this or another that, so what I haven't got of SOG's, I probably won't get ... all right, Spec Elite II is still looking good :)

But they are basically good solid knives with a lot of design variety.

Thanks, gadgetgeek and Esav
As Esav mentioned, he has more knives than Carters got pills :p
I am in the same boat as well, and have a wife keeping tabs on my purchase's.
But this will be the last one I promise! ;) so lets give one a try.
I will report back, with my comments on my first SOG.
PS As I mentioned before I have Kershaws, Bencmade and my favorite's Spyderco's. Each product has it's own character and wether week or strong,
we are very fortunate to have these companies putting out a quality product for us.

Dave
