im looking at a spec elite and understand that the current production knives are made with vg10 and the old stock is aus8. ive looked at 2 different knives, one was in a white box and the other was in a black box. both blades are not labeled as to what steel they are made from and im wondering if i can distinguish it by the box. does anyone know?

I have been waiting to find a spec elite II believing I could get one in VG-10 but in checking SOG's site it appears that it is still being made in aus-8. Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

I just checked and on the SE II it does indeed say AUS8. IIRC I thought all the Elites (PEI and II, SEI and II) were going to get changed over to VG-10.

I did notice that the Spec Elite I is labeled as VG-10. Odd...

In ebay there is a seller called bk global (or something like that) which lists his Pentagon Elite II as with VG-10. I messaged the fella to confirm and he came back with Aus 8a. Not too honest if he's listing with updated steel but delivering old models.

Just remember to ask around guys. Maybe SOG should print or mark on the blade like Spyderco does. Avoids confusion and enables trial runs of exotic steels.

im actually holding off on a sog for right now. i did check out the spec elites at my local shop and it seemed very well built but my brother just bought his first sog, a twitch II and he was not very impressed with it. both he and i are bigtime benchmade users and his description of the twitch was borderline cheesy. i'll have to look at the spec's again to make my decision.

Twitch cheesy, you really need to take a look at it for yourself, its a sheeple friendly EDC, very gentlemen like in its looks, definately not cheesy.

Just bought a Spec Elite II and it came in the black box with one white side as was described in the post by spidyman. Has it ever been officially determined that the black box Spec Elites are VG10:confused::confused:? I did have a Pentagon II that came in the white box and was AUS8.

I have gotten info on the VG-10 Spec Elite II knives. We just switched those over the beginning of March. So all Spec Elite II knives leaving here are VG-10 now. I would estimate that in the next two months all new Spec Elite knives out in the market for sale would be VG-10. I hope this helps.

So the black box-white box thing doesn't mean anything? Even if mine is AUS8, it came hair popping sharp right out of the box!

It would be great to place a mfg date or, even better, the type of steel used, on the knives.
Some type of indication; anything.

Otherwise how can a customer ever tell whether a dealer has old stock?

The dealers themselves might not know; not every dealer physically "rotates" their stock.

I second that. Both AUS-8 and VG-10 are going to be hair popping right out of the box, but VG-10 will hold longer.

I also agree that SOG needs to label their blades, pretty much everyone else does. Chris, do you know if SOG has any plans to do such?
