Spec Elites edge geometry?

Love almost everything about my Pent Elite2. Thing that bugged me is the edge came really thick. It didn't bite into anything when I took it out of the box. It was sharp, but it didn't slice for crap. I bet it would have chopped a lot of stuff though... Anyway I spent a good 3+ hours with some files and my sharpmaker to get it sharp, though I still can't get it to shave and I just don't know why!!! :grumpy:

So I'm curious to know what peoples experiances are with the SEIIs? I love the handle, lock, feel... But I don't want to spend another 3 hours on the edge to make it cut.

And if anyone owns both the PEII and a SEII a comparison of the "out of the box" conditions would be really great.

I see you are in USA, maybe you could try contacting SOG if they would reprofile/sharpen it?

ERINT,
I have both the SEI and SEII and they are equally wicked sharp and have been simple to keep that way even though I carry (and use) one or both just about every day. The geometry of the Pentagon blade, though perfectly useful for some, is what led me to buy the Spec Elite series: the Spec is a more traditional cutting geometry instead of a design more specific for thrusting or stabbing. The Pentagons can still be made to cut but the Spec series is designed to cut and slice more readily and wow do they ever. I can see where in certain defensive scenarios the Pentagon might be more desirable but for most situations (in my opinion) the Spec is more versatile. Both are excellent knives for their respective purposes. Hope this helps you.

It does help a great deal Sir! I have a SEII on my ebay watch list right now.;)

I thought of sending the knife back to SOG for sharpening but after the 3 hours with the file and strop and sharpmaker... I figured I'd removed enough steel on my own. :D

It's sharp now, and cuts really well. The lack of shaving sharpness even after stropping wierds me out though.

It is weird - I can get my Camillus CUDA EDC (Aus8 - same as SOG PE/SE) to shaving sharpness on Sharpmaker only. (In fact I can made even our kitchen knives (Zepter, but I have no idea what steel they are made from, probably something rubbish, they won't stay sharp long) shaving sharp.

(Do you mean shaving hair on arm don't you?:) Facial hair is bit more difficult :))

Erint, Glad you like your Spec Elite. :) Been drooling over them ever since Chris mentioned them earlier in the year. Got to see one in a store a few weeks back. Was hard walking out of there with out it. Good luck with the sharpening. It can be tricky at times. I can't seem to get shaving sharp edges on some knives no matter how hard I try, though on some knives I can do it with a simple stone, and other knives I'd use sand paper strops to get them to shave. Never could figure that one out.

To those that have the SE's congrats!! One day they will be mine too... ;)

ERINT,
I have had very good luck with a 3/4'' thick ceramic crock stick. This one has the angle guide built into the handle so that one can achieve a perfect angle on each stroke which is very important to hone the blade to shaving sharpness. All my knives are sharpened with this tool and it does not take long for the hair to fall from my arm proving the edge is shaving sharp. A simpe scrub with a brillo pad cleans the metal from the surface of the stick when it gets loaded up. It will not restore a badly nicked or damaged edge but to get a blade to the last little honing to shave with, nothing beats it. I recently purchased a used Midnite Tiger and it was not shaving sharp when I opened the package. Ten strokes of the crock stick and it cleaned the hair off my arm. My Spec Elites stay like a razor with minimal effort. Buy one of these and its easy to do. Hope this helps.

Guess I can ask here rather than start a new thread, about the same knives.

Are there any plans at all to make the PE and SE I and II assited opening?
