My 21 year old is following in daddy's footsteps and graduated the Police Academy and started his career. I want to buy him a watch but let him pick it out. He went to the Spec Ops Watch website and started drooling. Anyone know anything about them, I have never heard a thing. This is one of the models he likes but for $1800 is it worth it? Thanks

For that kind of money you can start to get into entry level high quality watchs like a Breitling or Ball. I would suggest he go to TimeZone.com and do some research. Look at the type of movement a watch has. Also, I would hate to pay that much only to have it get scratched and nicked up the first time it hit the concrete in the take down of a "criminal type"...

wrong forum, but i agree with stu. for that money you can get many watches that are from established companies.

Ira...Trust me on this...Get your son two watches...One to wear while on duty (on the street), something like a Casio G-Shock...And a nice one to wear to "show-off" to his budies...One of the Citizen EcoDrive Diver's or Chronos would be nice.

I know you didn't ask this, but I have a Vostok. It looks very nice, and would fit in when I need to be all fancy (ha, like that'll ever happen) and it's definitely rugged enough to withstand stuff like police duty. I wouldn't be surprised if it survived a nuclear war. It won't cost over 100 dollars either.

Never heard of Spec Op watches, but there are a lot of small watch companies that specialize in these kinds of military style watches. For that kind of money I'd defiantely look at a Breitling, Sinn, Omega, Ball, Hamilton, etc. $1800 will get you a really nice automatic watch from a reputable manufacturer. I'd pick a Breitling myself but that's probably a bit biased since I own around 10 of them.

Fuck those guys, they capitalize on the wannabe market. Go with Omega, Sinn, Breitling, etc. Check out TimeZone for more information. Hell, CountyComm has a really kickass Marathon GSAR watch that is actually military issue and looks nice as well.

This makes a great deal of sense, even if it does come from Dann! :D

You wouldn't normally wear a dress uniform on duty, why wear a dress watch. Find him a real nice watch for the occasion and toss in a G-Shock for daily wear.

I've got a Casio G-Shock, cost around $AUS300 from memory. Plenty of functions including alarms and both analog and digital display. A bit bulky but you could probably toss it over a cliff and drop a large rock on it and it wouldn't get a scratch. Water resistant for a long way down too. Might not look "tactical" but it's the sort of thing a bloke would wear.

I work around horses a lot and a watch can get some serious punishment.

Mine is the "Cockpit" series G-540-D2

You can see it here: http://www.a-watches.com.au/store/g-shock/page-1.html

Thanks Kevin, took your advice and bought him a Sinn. I gave it to him yesterday and he absolutely loves it.
This is the first time I laid my eyes and was able to handle a Sinn and was quite impressed.
I showed him the Marathon GSAR and he likes that one also but he is on his own for that one now that he earns a salary. Nothing wrong with a kid owning two nice watches. Sound advice Dann, and of course I trust you doesn't everyone??

Thanks again guys for all your advice, it's far better than Consumer Reports.

And I have no idea how this ended up in this forum?????
