Spec Ops Sheath plastic insert HELP

Well, I tried to mold the plastic insert in my large Spec Ops sheath for my ESEE 6. I scrupulously followed directions picked up off this very website. Unfortunately, they were not very good directions. The insert to this sheath acts like a shrinky-dink in the oven method. It is now far too short and far too wide to ever get back inside the nylon. SO, I thought I'd just buy a couple new ones from Spec Ops. Turns out they charge like $17 each for new plastic inserts! It's not that $17 is an awful lot of money - it's just that I can't bring myself to spend that much on that particular component. In my mind it's like spending $5.00 on a candy bar. Okay, I'm cheap - besides the point.

I'd like to try to make a new insert myself, but have no idea of where to start. I don't know where to buy Kydex or plastic or whatever else might be a good material. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Where do I get it and what do I do?

Thank you!

A square foot should be plenty enough to get the job done. There might be one of our kydex benders willing to sell you a piece.

Also, most of the more popular knife maker suppliers sell kydex by the square foot.

I have my ESEE 6 in a Combat Master and it seems to fit well, just rattles a bit because the sheath is made to accommodate up to a 1/4" knife. Was that what you were trying to fix? You might have had the oven a bit too hot.

Thanks for the reply Leatherman. I guess I just got fancy w/ trying to form that Esee to the sheath. The rattle didn't even bother me that much - just wanted to try and make it fit snuggly. Oven was definitely too hot. I picked up another Spec Ops sheath at a local gun show for $25 and I'm living comfortably w/ the fit on the second sheath. The first sheath just needs to be fixed now.

Can you recommend one of the suppliers you referred to in your response? When the lady from Spec Ops told me that 2 inserts cost 40 something dollars I about blurted out a couple cuss words.

^^That, and Texas Knifemaker Supply as well.

I just noticed you live in San Antonio as well! Let me check and see if I have a big enough piece in my pile, If I do I'll drop it in a big envelope.

The price for a replacement insert is a bit high huh? wow.

Oh man! That would be great! Just let me know what part of town you're in and I'll meet you near there - if you have any spare. I was really expecting both inserts to cost around $15 - $20 at most.

I didn't get the chance to look today, about my luck, but I will try to get in there in the next couple of days. Promise.

There's a box of kydex scraps in a drawer in my closet, I just need to break down and dig in.
