Im planing on getting one of these, and a custom Ranger RD knife. I want the knife to be as long as the sheath can accommodate, but I keep finding different specifications.

Some have it listed as 8.5"

One Stop Knife shop says 7.0"

Would an 8.5"x1/4" blade fit in properly? Or should I get it made to 8.25"?

Does the sheath have the appropriate loops to horizontally mount it with alice clips?

I have both sizes of the sheath. According to the catolog, the small fits up to 6 inch blades, the large up to 8 inches.
I found that the small fits a little longer, maybe 6 1/2inches. The large is pretty spot on 8 inches.
You can always remove the retaining screw at the bottom, which will give you a little extra room. However, the kydex lining will possibly come out with the blade when you draw it, depending on how snugly it fits.
There are loops on the back of the sheath for attaching to molle gear or the like.

If you ask Justin at Ranger, he should be able to tell you which RDs fit which sheath. He's very helpful and knowledgeable.

It is true:o

I own both ..long and short version.
Short can accomodate about 16 cm[6,3 inch] of blade lengh.
Long version will not go over 20cm [8inches] ...I would rather say a few milimetres less if you want to keep your kydex fixed as it comes from the factory.

...and I am wery sattisfied with both of them :D

I own both size combat sheaths which are basically the same as yours dimensionally.

The Ranger RD 7 with a 7.5" blade just fits in the larger sheath perfectly with the tip of the blade just missing the liner screw. I'm not a fan of removing the liner screw. The key here is two things; blade length, and type of blade.

On the larger sheath, it measures 8" from the top of the sheath liner, down to the center of the sheath screw. If you had an 8" blade, and the point of the blade was centered in the sheath, you would be just touching the screw. On some blades, which are not as wide, that the point of the blade is offset a bit in relation to the screw, you could go a tad longer than 8" on the larger spec ops sheath.

You should be safe with the RD7 with a 7.5" blade in the larger sheath. You will more than likely need to heat the sheath liner to fit it to your knife. If you boil it, dont over do it, or the liner will shrink in length, trust me, I know!!

ETA..... I believe Justin measures his blades from the tip to the center of the choil. If the choil were an inch say, you would have to add half that to the blade length.

Thanks guys. This spec ops sheath length is really screwing with me, the SpecOps catalog says 8.5" (http://specopsbrand.com/pdf/SPECOPS_CATALOG.pdf page15)
What the hell is going on eh? I wonder why there are so many different reports. Anyway, I'll take your guys' word for it, the measuring stick doesnt lie.

Can anyone comment on how well the retaining strap works with the RD knives?

The strap is adjustable and I've had no problems securing my RD7 with it.
As BrianNH noted, the RD7 fits very snugly. A longer RD just wouldn't fit.

As I said... On the spec Ops large sheath, it MAY, take up to an 8.5" blade assuming the blade design has a point offset from the centerline of the sheath where the screw sits.
