been thinking about getting a william henry kestrel. thought about the pearl handle, but would be paranoid about cracking it somehow, plus, its a little too expensive. so, i'm interested in the desert ironwood handled version. are there any special precautions for wood handles? can i wash it like any other knife? do i need to periodically stain it? i've only owned SS, frn, or G10 knives, so any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

S.C.,

All natural materials are prone to damage . You may even damage synthetic materialls. MOP is one of the easiest to damage, Desert Ironwood is of the hardest to damage.

Ironwood is usually 'stabilized', in most cases, this means the maker has soaked the wood in some type of resin and then made the scales or handle. This type can be washed like any normal cutlery.

If it's a WH knife, I would not worry too much, they have a great name for a reason.

Desert Ironwoon is fast becoming a scarce commodity, almost all that is sold now has been stabilized (ie cracks filled) and an unchecked block the size of your head might be worth more than you make in a few years.

Good luck!

All you need to know about wood handles is Ren Wax. That stuff makes ANY wood look better and protects it as well.

A can of Ren Wax will last you the rest of your life, probably. Just rub a teeny bit on your handle; like spit shining your boots, and then buff it off with a soft cloth like an old Tshirt. You will be amazed at how your handle looks.

Its the best product I have ever used for polishing and protecting wood. I found it to keep brass from tarnishing for much longer than anything else I have tried as well.

MOP is less durable than other materials, but it's also not as fragile as some may think. I've been carrying an LCC with MOP scales for close to a year now and I have yet to crack or chip the scales. I've dropped it a few times and fully expected to see a crack or chip but haven't yet. Gets a little scratched up with my keys in the same pocket, but it still looks fine to me. Of course I may just have been really lucky so far.

broke down and ordered the MOP version. thanks for all the info. any tips on caring for MOP?

I wish desert ironwood could be stabilized but it is too dense.

Don’t ask how I know. :(

I'm not sure if this model come with a pocket slip sheath, if not get one to carry it in.
