Okay, I don't think too many of us use our AKs in the kitchen. But what of the knives? I plan to use my brand new AK Bowie in the kitchen.

What special care do you take of HI cutlery used in the kitchen?

The only advice that I could give is to clean the blade well after use and then apply a light coat of mineral oil to protect the blade after cleaning.

I used my Kumar karda to split some lobster tails. It worked fine, but the juices caused instant tarnish. I don't mind this on my carbon steel sabatier (it is a nice gray), but didn't want this on the shiney karda. I was able to remove the tarnish with some CLIP. I recommend the stuff highly as a preservative. Of course, wash the knife right before use.
I also have used the Lee Valley conservator's wax on some blades and fittings. It works great to prevent rust.

I used my KK in the kitchen alot. I kind of liked the patina that grew on it over the course of time. I used veggie oil, which isn't as good as mineral oil as it can build up a residue over time, but then it never sat still for long enough to build up so it wasn't a problem. Once the kid used the knife and just sat it in the sink.....ONCE  ......had to use the scotch brite to remove the rust that set in quickly :grumpy: but it survived just fine and was still cool to look at.

Is that the KK that I have now, Mamav? It's still cool to look at, works hard and keeps asking for more!

I use Thompson Center bore butter on my HI knives that cut food or meat. Seasons the steel, prevents rust and seems to make them more resistant to etching.

And whatever you do, don't put 'em in the diswasher. ;)

I love bore butter with all of my heart. It goes on all of my muzzleloaders as well as my knives.

And its food grade, so you could use it on pancakes.

I looked on the T/C site but I can't see where it says bore butter is edible. Do you have a URL?

It's printed right on the label, "Non-toxic, all ingredients are food grade rated and biodegradable."

It's just a question of whether you want your pancakes to taste like wintergreen.
