Special edition 110's?

I see lots of "special edition" and such Buck 110's but are they mostly made by Buck or other makers (I mean the modding, not the steel etc)? How could I generally recognize wether it's wise to buy speciality versions or not?

Im thinking buying one of those with some special scales rather than the regular, since they cost pretty much the same than buying regular here. I love the regular one too though, but I feel like going for something special. :)

I would look at the Buck Custom Shop which is on their website so see if they make any versions which you may like. Or, look around for the Limited Editions which they put out. Either of those are factory knives and will have the full warranty.

Or, you can go with an aftermarket customizer. However, that will void the warranty on the knife. Really up to you, I have done both routes. So long as you go with a good customizer and don't abuse your knives I think you are fine.

Don't know a good way to tell them apart unless the factory stuff is in a box still. The more knowledgable guys would know better than I but with all the versions/variations out there it's hard to tell at times.

If your talking about all the specially scaled ones on Ebay, most if not all, of those have been rehandled after leaving Buck.

Some are pretty good, but it's important to note that Buck will not warranty these knives since they have been rehandled by someone else.

Two of the main sellers of these on Ebay, "digital_freaks" and "deadwoodknives", state in their auctions, that these knives are warrantied, and when I asked both sellers by email who warrantied them, they replied that the knives had "Buck's lifetime warranty", but this is not true.

as a note to after market customs
some of these makers were investigated by buck as to
making them a Buck Suppler such as David Yellowhorse is..

many times it was the makers in-a-billity to supply the amount
that buck needed that was the down fall of completing that contract..
one that did after market for years and now is offical on some items
is
mike and his Painted Pony brand..
wow that guy is taller then me and jest as big..
one of these please dont hit me mister guys..
but lots nicer then i am ...

Thanks guys for the responses. I might go with the classic one after all, since it is _the_ 110 design. I have knife buying limit full for this month, so I have good time to think for it anyway.

Talking of custom ones, stag with nickel silver makes my pants wet every time. They are a bit costy though through Buck site atleast.

I'm a sucker for those special edition custom 110's too. I have a few of them and try to buy them whenever a new one is released ( and my wife isn't looking :)) Stag and nickel is my favorite too.

Be aware that the current nickel silver that Buck uses on their customs scratches very easily. IMO they are only good for display knives that aren't put to any use, unless you don't mind a lot of scratches on the bolster. For the more rustic looking knives like the napped blades or the "chip flints" the scratches give it character, but the polished look will not hold if you carry the knife, let alone if you use it.

That it will indeed do, but I do also like worn knives.
