After reading this thread, I was excited about the possibility of getting a Fred Perrin La Griffe straight from France for a reasonable price. I checked out the Courty et Fils website and decided on one with blond buffalo horn scales (same as described in above thread, no longer pictured on website). I got an email saying they were out of those, but had one with black buffalo horn instead (apparently the blond horn is hard for Monsieur Perrin to get). I actually prefer black (it will match my khukuri

) so this is what I ordered.

I asked what other models they had that were not pictured on the web site, and they sent the following picture:

Damascus La Griffe with mother-of-pearl handles

This is a special edition and costs 2800 FF (about US $365). It's a little out of my price range

, but it's so gorgeous that I had to share it. Interested parties should contact Courty et Fils ASAP.

I am a new fan of the La Griffe in a big way. The knife is surprising in its versatility, and beautiful in a hand made sort of way that really appeals to me.

Here is my La Griffe Supre (note file work and temper line - exquisite!):

Here are two of my Perrin customs together.

Top is my Perrin Bali Bowie which handles beautifully and is the pride of my bali collection. Bottom is my Perrin Buffalo Horn Bowie Griffe.
Fred's style is very unique and somewhat eccentric. In other words, his blades share his personality.

Awesome! I have been admiring Fred's work for years! Those are all nice knives shown. I would love to do a couple knock offs, but drilling those holes is too dangerous on my equipment. The prices direct from France seem to be pretty reasonable. Question: does the French cutlery shop speak good English, do they do Internet orders, and what does shipping run? For now I have to be content with my Emerson copy.

They sell online, accept credit cards and ship for about $17. And if you are not in a hurry, I can check their shop for you and give you my oppinions about the best buy. Not all Griffes they sell are on the web site. Today I've played with some of them, includding the Damascus one and another one with ivory scales. Sweet! BTW, the thread that "infected" David Park with the money-eatting Griffe virus is mine

Chiro75, the shop speaks good English, and I had no problems with email correspondence. Shipping is 120 FF to the USA. Use this site to figure out the price in US$. The exchange rate seems pretty good at the moment.

Eric, I hope my Griffe looks as good as yours (though it's not a bowie). I would love to have one of his balisongs too.

flava, you're lucky to have easy access to Perrin blades.

I'd love to see the ivory-handled one, but I'm sure it is also out of my price range.

No disrespect to the Perrin knives. I like them a lot.

But, I read this thread last nite. Used the link to Courty et Fils. Spent the next 90 minutes or so looking over just a portion of the many knives they carry. Thought about e-mailing David to ask if he had any similar European knife vendor links. Now Flava has posted, and he's over there.

Anyone, please, could you supply links to any European vendors of European -- or other -- knives? It was so refreshing to see so many different types of knives, particularly the manufactured variety. I did look at a couple French bladesmiths, and was duly impressed with their designs.

Anyhow, I'd really appreciate any good links to help me while away more hours on the web. Thanks in advance! (Oh -- I do have and look at Cutlery to go, and Worldwide knives or something similar.)

Go to www.messerforum.net ,that´s the premier German language knife discussion board, and click on "forum" on the top left, . http://www.messerforum.net/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi That´s the main forums page. At the lower part (scroll down), you´ll see a section called "Datenbank" (database) with forums that contain links to "Messermacher" (knifemakers), "Händler" (dealers), "Hersteller" (manufacturers), "Zubehör" (accessories) and other info. It´s the largest collection of knife links on a European board, and logically lots of European links. You can also check out the European Knife Directory at http://www.the-ekd.co.uk/1024/welcome.htm
Happy surfing

Thank you very much, Flava and Judge. I really appreciate those links. I had World Knives, but it is different than the World Knife database.

I'm guessing you guys have enabled many hours of viewing and learning for me. That is so great. I can't get over what a resource the forums can be! You guys are great!
