Hi, guys!

A few years ago, I seem to recall a special version of a puukko commemorating a man who had been a Green Beret and a member of a Scandinavian Special Forces Unit (Finnish, I think). I'm not sure what company made it; but it was supposedly a decent one. I know it was reviewed in a knife magazine.

My Google Foo is failing me...anyone recognize what I'm talking about, who can provide a name? Does anyone own one, who can provide a few comments as to what they think of it?

Thanks!

I guess the man you're talking about could be Larry Thorne (Lauri Törni)? The only Lauri Törni memorial puukko I know of is the one pictured in the link: http://kotisivut.turunsanomat.fi/kotisivut/default.asp?id=1048&edeltaja=1356&sivu=1356&alisivu=1397 , which is unfortunately only in Finnish. He used to use a Marttiini puukkos in the war.

I used igoogle to translate the article. It ain't perfect, but you get the main idea.

I work a lot with veterans of the Winter War and Continuation war, and there are some impressive stories of Finnish soldiers and their basic puukkos during the kaukopartio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LRRP) missions against the Soviets :)

I understand that on those missions especially Larry Thorne put his puukko to use. I guess I should start writing those stories down as long those WW2 veterans are still alive..

Completely off topic: If anyone is wondering why igoogle translation keeps talking about a tower: Larry Thorne's original surname was Törni. Because in English you don't have the letter ö (with the ¨) igoogle reads Törni as "torni", which means "a tower" in English. Törni and torni are in fact two completely different words.

Tactial Knives Mar 2008 did an article "Finnish Fighter" A hero's puukko built behind enemy lines! The hero was Ilmari Honkanen, Pekka Tuominen buikt a custom 7" bladed replica of his puukko. www.puukkopekka.com

I wouldn't have guessed that Ilmari Honkanen is known outside Finnish borders.. cool. He was another soldier who made some impressive achievements in kaukopartio-troops, but never fought for any other armed forces. He did train some foreign troops in warfare in terrain typical to Northern Europe.

Les Ristinen, who used to run the Suomi Shop, had a Larry Thorne/Lauri Torni Commerative puukko made by Iisakki Jarvenpaa Oy in Finland. On the right side of the blade it says "Larry Thorne USA 10th SF" on the left side it says "Lauri Torni SA (in a box) SISSI". On the nickel silver bolster it has his service time in both the Finnish and US Army "1939-44-1952-69". The sheath has the US Special Forces shoulder sleeve insignia (patch) and the Finnish Sissi insgnia, a stylized three. On the butt is a nickel silver plate with the puukko serial number. The blade was about 5-inches long and had a curly birch handle. Unfortunately they are no longer available. John
