As much as I hate to do this, I feel I have to. I've avoided it in the past, even after it has been recommended by several friends, but it's time to start.
On any special requests, (numbers, initials, etc), before I start the order I will contact the buyer for a non refundable full payment for the order. The same thing will happen for non standard custom orders. To further explain, payment will not be due at the time the order is placed, only before I start any work on it.

I think that is a smart idea. You've built up enough reputation at this point that people shouldn't be worried that you are going to run away with our money. I have actually been wondering why you weren't doing this before. It makes sense to me on custom work. Otherwise you do something custom, they decide they don't want it, and then what? Very smart move imo.

Good idea. Since you get things done, there is little concern with problems some other makers have had with regard to getting the money, spending it and then not having it to build the knife.

I think this will work out for the better for you, since you DO make the knives when they are supposed to be made.

Good luck with the new policy - I support it 100%.

I was concerned you were going to post that you were no longer going to take special orders. I've got an idea that I need to get on paper and get your opinion of. Hopefully things at work will be better starting next week. I've got more overtime than regular time on my next paycheck. Payment should never be an issue and your thoughts are more than reasonable.

I agree. Im one of the "special requesters"

Itll save your butt in the long run.

Some one will certainly not want a knife that has my sons initials on it! :p

I agree with your decision ... and I fully expected that would be how it went when I placed my custom order with you l. I read and looked and checked out your feedback and your work and even talked to a few membrs that have ordered from you and hungout on your subforum and all of the great things I read and heard I would gladly do so. I think its fair and common sense.

Got my support too.
Someone wants personalization they should pay up front so you don't get stuck with a blade with some Allen Steven Smith's initials on it.

Let me see if I've got this right. Under this new rule if someone were to, Hypothetically, want a custom knife made, say a knife inspired by the outline of their erect genitals or some other really great idea like that, this customer would now have to pay up front, in full, before it was even made?

Sounds reasonable to me.

I really do think this is a fair business practice and a great decision. Of course, I still think requiring a deposit at the point of ordering, which would be applied towards the balance of the knife which is due prior to the start of the order, would cut down on canceled orders. It would help ensure that the order is serious and it would help cover the cost of your time handling quotes and emails.

It is too bad that you even had to make this decision, but totally understandable. I would have also thought that a required deposit would accomplish the same thing, but regardless, this will cut down on the tire kickers and impulse buyers, and not leave you holding the bag.

Anyone that really wants a JK custom should not have a problem with this, I know I wouldn't.
