Re-reading one of my favorite SF series ("Lens of the World" by RA MaCavoy). The protagonist gets trained in the martial use of a "hedger" or doughee (sp?) as she calls it. At an antique auction I picked up something that I always considered would follow this description. It looks like a large kami, or small single handed scythe (sorry, would append a photo, but don't have a place to host photos).

Does a real number on my box hedges, not to mention scaring the neighbors. Made me wonder if the kamis would ever attempt a kama. I know they are available pretty inexpensively, so it might not be practical. Still with some ornamentation and the HI flourish of carven wooden handles I think they would be very interesting.

What do you all think?

MacAvoy is a great author. Loved the Damiano books.

As for the kama, it wouldn't appeal to me, but I appreciate you mentioning it, as I had never heard of them.

Be interesting to see what sort of responses you get.

Good luck.

I think Uncle Bill once posted about why axes weren't made very often at HI. Good hardwoods suitable for axes and similar products aren't available in Nepal.

At least that's what I remember.

I recall he thought the handle situation would be nothing but grief. I didn't understand. I thought HI could make the axe heads and the buyer could worry about handles. Course, one stray axe head might bankrupt HI in litigation.

Hi alL,

Thanks for the response. Actually I did a search of the archives and found that a kama was a request by another Cantina participant. To be sure the kama more like a Hayasi with a bent handle than a tomahawk (which I would also love to see munk...). The tang could be hidden within the handle as in the swords, and I could see it with langolets (sp?) for reinforcement around the head, or just pinned in place like a Chiwura handle. I think most kama are connected in this fashion. A stiff, light wood (rattan) would probably be better for a kama handle anyway.

Just a thought.

Aardvark, if you liked the Damiano's lute novels I highly recommend the Lens series, they are her acknowledged masterwork. "Tea with a Black Dragon" is also worth a read, though in a mystery vein.

Buy a Hasiya and have it sent to Dan Koster with instructions.
I bet he could turn one into a nice kama in no time.
All he'd need to do is bend the tang and stick it on a longer handle.

I actually have a few tiller blades that are almost exactly that shape (waiting to be made into knives). Not much of a stretch at all....:D Maybe I'll give that a shot instead. Thanks for the inspiration.

Dan, you and Latticino, well, the whole thread has energized this thing into my brain. That's not good. Things don't leave there easily.

More of these reaper blades would be good. Geeze...four horseman of the Apocalypse....I can just see a great shining arc.
