"Special Project" Closed Down?

Perhaps. But Uncle Bill should rest and not have to worry about nosy forumites such as myself.

Dan, just take if offline. For some reason on this forum there is an automatic and unfair assumption that no matter what you propose you are doing it for your own selfish interests. This has happened at least 3 times in the past and is in direct opposition to the spirit of this forum that we all talk about so much.

Fine. Send out a group e-mail to those who responded to you and we'll take the whole thing out of the Cantina and handle it via email. Other folks can draw their own conclusions and make their own assumptions and contact you privately or not, (assuming that is still allowed.)

Norm

Norm, I don't even know what is going on, but think there would have been a better way to characterize this than your post. You're obviously angry now. I think you oughta cool off.

For the record, It was my 'instinct' that whatever Dan was doing he was doing to take care of grief in his own way.

There are, however, issues we mere mortals are not aware of from the perspective of the screen in front of us. I think respect is due
Rusty during this time.

Let me say something else; grief is powerful stuff. I don't expect anyone here to act 'normal'. Whatever that is. Before you all jump in with both feet and two paws, try and think about what the other guy may be feeling.

I thought Dan's project- whatever it was- was a grief coping thing. Fine with me. It may seem like a brass band or wake to others. Now, I'm just winging it-I don't know. But I am asking all of you to remember the best in each of us, and not jump to conclusions. There are paths and decisions here only a moderator like Rusty would know about.

I think Rusty has more than earned peace on this. I had a mentor best friend once. He died, and I never made it to his funeral or his death bed.
(my wife's father passed at the same time- tough month, tough year, tough couple of years)
Dan's project would seem to be alive on the net, and there's nothing wrong with that, either.

Whether you agree or disagree with Rusty, is it that impossible to imagine being his friend even if you disagree with him some of the time? It shouldn't be.
And I don't believe it is. Of course not.

Take a breath, and don't expect to understand everything that happens between heaven and earth.

Rusty has not had time to keep up with all the posts. It may have appeared that Dan's "special project" was something that was going to require time from Bill or Yangdu.

Although I haven't talked to Dan it seems probable from reading other posts that it is not something which would add to Bill and Yangdu's present burdens, and in fact it might brighten their days.

I think Dan and Rusty need to talk.

I agree, Dan and Rusty need to talk. This little project in no way will hinder Uncle Bill, Yangdu, or HI in anyway. Perhaps "special project" was a bad title for it, but i think some communication is in order. That said, i'll just go with the flow on this one.

Hey Munk. Nice post.

It is not at all impossible for me to imagine being everyone's friend here, including and especially Rusty's. I don't know of one person on this forum who can honestly say that over the past 15 months I have not always done my best to be a good guy, to be a peacemaker, to welcome new folks, to support proposed initiatives costing money, to comiserate with those hurting and in pain either physically or psychologically and offer up prayers and smoke when asked, to give away T-Shirts and other stuff I was fortunate enough to get, to be scrupulously honest in my dealings with the 6 or so forumites I have bought items from, to share what little knowledge I had or have learned here, to offer to upload pics with my account, etc., in short, to honor the spirit of the Cantina and Uncle Bill and HI. I can also say with a high degree of certainty that I doubt that anyone has supported HI itself or the Kami's more in the last year than myself. That is not bragging, that is just fact. (I don't expect special consideration at all because of that, I only mention it to show my commitment to HI and their products.)

And contrary to your supposition, I have NEVER disagreed with Rusty on any point except where I saw an unfair characterization of Dan's motives, 2 times in the last year.

However I DO think it is impossible for _Rusty_ to imagine being my friend, or friends with some folks online here who do not meet with his favor. I don't know why that is in my case, but it is very disconcerting to be merely tolerated by someone when you don't know why, or know what you have done to offend them. (I have my own idea as to why, but will keep it to myself, or at least off the forum.)

Regards,

Norm

I can't believe this is happening here. There's no reason for such class acts as Norm, Dan, Rusty and Munk to be at odds with each other. Can't we all just get along?

Dan, couldn't you just drop the secret and tell everyone whats going on?

The horror... the horror...

When Dan gets an idea he takes off and charges into it without giving the courtesy of putting it up for suggestions. Not just for my comments but for the rest of the forum to pipe in. If it is a good idea, fine, but the others on the forum tend to add worthwhile input that can improve on the deal. This is one of the reasons he is no longer a moderator. A bull in a china shop so to speak. It is a pattern that he has repeated.

Bill and I tend to let ideas get brought up, let flow until something like a consensus is reached and then let it go at it's own speed rather than trying to make haste to get the thing done. There are several ways Bill might find to work for him. Wireless connection to computer to keyboard, larger monitor on a stand that he could pull in front of him or shove aside, and on and on. The laptop is a possibility - or the combined screen and keyboard might be unweildy.

I woke up this morning, logged on, and saw a stampede in progress.

I brought it to a halt before it went further. I'm now calmed down a bit.

So now it is up to the forum - do things in line with the forum's tradition and kick things around, or take it offline to e-mail and continue as Dan has planned. Up to you and Dan.

I'm not invested either way. Just if you want to do things in the future, allow the rest of the forum to have it's say before coming to a decision.

Not sure what to do next.....guess I'll just remain in the dark - hands tied.

allow the rest of the forum to have it's say before coming to a decision.
The decision was (is being?) made, either for or against, by:
1) people emailing Dan as to what the project is
2) deciding whether it was a good idea and participating or not

It happened to be done off-forum, but the results will be the same: if enough people like it, they will participate and it will happen, or else it will die of it's own weight.

No email received from Dan Koster at this point.

( Evidently Dan has deleted the part of his above post where he said he'd emailed me. )

Russ....still checking mail at the old address? russlate@NOSPAMgbis.com

(without the NOSPAM, of course)

Russ,

I started a "special project" thread based on your idea of getting a wireless laptop w/DSL for Bill - no need for him to foot the bill, I think the forum can come up with the funds. Anyway, the response has been tremendous. I need your help to keep Bill/Yangdu from trying to get one for themselves. Can you help deter them? I will probably need until the end of next week at least to get everything up and running smoothly. I've set up a few wireless systems.....easy for me to do, no problem there. Bill is running AOL DSL still right? That'll be a breeze too.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Dan

How did you know I was planning a laptop as the special project?

feel free to close 'er down if you want....

nothing to look at here folks. ;)

Perhaps we should wait and see if Bill's going home soon.

I am more concerned about the division here than I am with the good gesture of a lap top. This forum has to stand or fall once Bill is gone. I see at the slightest cause for hurt not forebearence but, 'who kicked Fred first?"

It is a sin to be offended under certain circumstances. The loss of a loved and respected person is one such.

I will say again we do not have the right to be offended if it means hurting this forum at this crucial time. Has someone been misjudged? We'll fix it by and by- or anyone holding onto the past will have to carry that, that is no longer the responsibility of the living, of those who are participating in good faith. Good faith is turning aside injury and believing the best of ourselves at this time.

Rusty has explained his reasons and Dan had a good idea. Does anyone wish to persist in more than this?

Of all times to have **** like this going on in Uncle Bill's house. Let it rest, folks. Tempers are short all around I'm sure. I know mine has been.
