Specific questions for Wegner owners...

Actually, I've been meaning to ask to all Wegner owners, since I am seriously considering to purchase this knife:

1) How is the tip of the Wegner?
Is it too fine a tip, as fine as, say, the Military's tip? Or is it more "robust", such as the Starmate's, and if so, does it look to be stronger than the Starmate's?

2) Does it look like the tip would break easily if one were to stab semi-tough things with it? (I'm not referring to car doors).

3) Does the ATS-34 blade hold up well for light chopping of wood and other similar hard materials, and does the blade have good corrosion resistance?

4) Overall, would you characterize it as better overall than the Military or Starmate for handling "hard-use" tasks?

Thanks,

The tip is more robust than the Military, not nearly as fine, without the distal taper. If it says anything, I have snapped the tip off of a Starmate, but never my Wegner.

The blade of the Starmate and the Wegner are sort of similar, although the Wegner has more belly. The big difference (to me) is that the Wegner has a heavier, more substantial feel, and the handle is more comfortable, without the sharp angles and edges of the Starmate.

I think that you'll find ATS-34 to hold up better than 440V in chopping. 440V is more brittle, although Spyderco heat treats 440V better than just about anyone. As for corrosion resistance, it works out just fine for me, and my Wegner's been ridden pretty hard.

Much more substantial than the Military tip. I have chopped some with mine, and it has held up well, although the chopping results in the liner lock moving all the way over to the opposite liner. However, once you unlock it to fold it, the liner is once again in its normal position next time it is opened. I can't imagine the tip breaking, although I'm sure if you really tried, you could. I once snapped about a half-inch off the tip of a Benchmade 710, and that was hard enough that I knew before hand it was going to go. That being the case, I think you would really have to abuse the Wegner to snap its tip off. The ATS-34 in it is as good as I've seen, including custom ATS-34. Good knife. I like it. It's my no-sh** heavy duty outdoor folder.
