I'm not sure if its what i think it is,but i just cleaned up a blade post HT and its all speckled. The blade is a nicholsan file i normailized 3x quenched 3x with the final quench on the edge.most of the blade has tiny little spots on it.is this clusters from an improper HT  or just from the finish being half done.I couldnt get a picture but it kinda explains itself.i quenched in penut oil if that helps.

It sounds like decarb. Try sanding it up to 120 or even 220 grit on the belt grinder.

Thanks scott, I took it up to 220 on la machine and they vanished,I just wasnt sure if it was an grain growth issue.I remember some one sayin you will get a damascusy kindof spotted look if over heated for the HT.Now to not screw it up any more. ;)

You would have to break the blade to check the grain. I'm sure you wouldn't want to have to do that.:D
