Greetings,

IIRC, I've seen some SpecOps sheaths modded to handle thicker (.27+") Busses. Anybody have any real world experience w/ this? Can their 'long' model (up to 8" blade length) be modded to fit a FSH?

While plans are on the distant horizon for custom leather, would like to get something a little more wallet friendly and readily available to get out on the trail w/o the wait. I've got a couple SpecOps sheaths for other knives, and they seem pretty decent for the $$.

Any feedback appreciated.

I've seen the sheath with a built in pouch be modified by taking out the plastic part and either sticking it in an oven and molding it bigger, or replacing it with a thin kydex molded sheath.

But, the FSH is probably way too wide for the spec ops sheaths, there's only so much stretching you could do.

That's good to know. I think some folks have slit the kydex insert along the spine side to allow it to expand to fit the thicker blade in some cases.

Possibly, tho it looks like one fellow managed to make it work in the Hiking Sheath thread now running. Don't know how much psi was required to cram that FSH in there tho.

But these are good threads...inquiring minds want to know what options are out there, both custom and off the shelf.

Too bad it looks like the Lost Mtn folks went out of biz. Looked like just the ticket for larger Bussekin.

My newer model KC satin Heavy Heart did not fit. I tried stretching, and even sent her out for a custom liner, but she was just too wide and thick to fit.

One of the biggest problems you will face is not that the liner want stretch to fit the blade, but that you WON'T get the liner back in the nylon once stretched. I did one of my custom SFNO's the other day before I left the house for the plant and the liner JUST squeeked in. I have a Sabre Ground SFNO that I can't even think about getting it in a Spec-Ops. Really wish we had more nylon and kydex options than we do but they just ain't out there!!!

Yes a FSH can fit in the large and yes I have experience. I've done it several times. It was very taxing in patience and I ruined 2 inserts before getting it right, but I successfully stretched the insert to fit the FSHH and got it back into the sheath. There are several descriptions/tutorials on here if you search for them, but I can help if you have further questions.

That is one of them. Mine (which I can't seem to locate) explains it a bit different. I used the oven on about 200 degrees with the insert on a cookie sheet. With the edge of the blade taped, it still took me about an hour to heat it up and push the knife in a little at a time. I did not cut the insert at all to make the knife fit. In making the insert fit the sheath I have used vegetable oil on the insert and also I've used a heat gun to smooth outside edges. Keep in mind that I did this with the Spec-Ops brand Survival sheath and they had very good kydex back then. I've noticed that they have since moved to something thinner.

You can always leave the insert intact and just boil it in a sauce pan. When it gets warm enough the insert with soften enough to stretch. I was able to use this method for my SOD.

Here is what I did with my HH. Kydex by Buy Brown, pouch is a Spec-Ops multi tool pouch.
