SpecWar vs. CQC 7; Is it worth the cost?

HI, all.
I've seen both the CQC 7 and the Specwar. Sure, the Specwar handles better, but for the money you're basically getting the same amount of material and craftsmanship, right?
So, is the Specwar worth the extra $50 bucks?

Hello!
I don't really like the Specwar, my hands don't seem to fit the handle (or as i'm older then the knife, quite the opposite...)
As i compare my Raven to the Specwar i feel that they are the same size, the Raven just fits my hand better.

To cut it short, NO!

I very much prefer the '7 to the Specwar.

2sharp, what do you think of the Raven? Worth the money? Does it have the karma of a $180 knife or is it just like any other plastic handle blade (Endura, Ascent etc)?

I like the Specwar handles better also, feels more comfortable in my hand. However I own both and would feel confident in carrying either one. they are both quality knives. To be honest anything from Emerson Knives is great.

Dark Nemesis

p.s. - thats my round the bush way of saying, no its not worth the $50

All the knives in the world go round and round, round and round, round and round...DAMN, one of them took my wallet !!! :)

Of the three, I like the 'C7 the best. It just seems like a beefier knife than the Spec War, although in truth I like all three quite a bit: Raven, SW and 'C7. The synthetic handle on the Raven is definately higher quality than others on the market, and the nested liners are a nice touch. The handle on the Spec War fits my hand very well, no complaints. While the grip-profile of the C7 is not as ergo as the Spec War, it really doesn't bother me. The C7 was a knife I wanted for a long time, and was my first "nice" knife. Maybe that's why it's still the Emerson apple of my eye, although the Commander is one helluva blade. If you click on my signature line there are some decent scans of all four.

Hello,

A clip-point Specwar is one of my daily carry knives. It fits surprisingly well in a back pocket. The handle is one of the main reasons I bought this model over any of the others - it fits my relatively slim hand with long fingers perfectly. The squared off butt also makes for a quick grab.

The throw radius of the opening disk is dialed in for me and the lock-up is dead solid perfect. I can't figure out why this knife is not more popular than it is.

Hallå Pelle!

The only problem that i have with the Raven are the location of the thumbdisc, due to the shape of the handle it doeasn't sit centered in the finger cutout when folded.

Maybe not a big concern but it feels clumsy for me, it feels like i will miss it if i was to open it quickly (or maybe in a stressful situation)
Otherwise i like it a lot, very comfy handles and feel, small and easy to carry.
Have you been thinking 'bout a CQC-7 or a Commander ??? they are great! especially the Commander, my daily carry blade.

I have an E1B tanto Raven. I love the handle, but wish I had gotten the clip point instead of the chisel ground (one sided) tanto blade. I think my problem is with the chisel grind rather the tanto profile. If I'm not mistaken, the blade on the CQ7 is 3.3 inches long, versus 3.5 on the SpecWar and the Raven. In other words, 0.2 inches difference. Boils down to personal preference IMHO. I also wish I had gone with bead blasted instead of black-t finish. I'm sure it helps prevent corrosion if you're near water, but in Kansas that's not a big problem. The black-t coating scratches quite easily also.

The most positive attribute of the Specwar is the handle design. The index groove, along with the thumb grooves on the spine side of the handle create a sort of guard, which would prevent slippage if thrusted into a resistant media. Both knives are excellent and Emerson's customer service is fantastic for a smaller company. Is it worth the extra money? Only if you like it more, but I'm pretty sure you can find one NIB for a lot less than list.

I've handled both knives on multiple occasions and must say that the SpecWar feels much better in the hand. Its handle is definitely its best attribute.

It really all boils down to personal preference. If you decide that you prefer the SpecWar over the CQC7 I'm sure you'll be able to find it available for a lower price.

2Sharp, I have had a BM 975 for some years. Sould have bought the regular 970/CQC7 as I find the 975 too large. And that damned bead blast finish makes it rust like an old Volkswagen. I find the chisel blade pretty useless too. But the looks of the CQC7 is unbeatable, perhaps with the exeption of the D. Ralph Krait. My work-buddy carries a
Ti-CQC7 so I get to play with one of those on a regular basis. Discount Knives had some of those last Ti´s for around $130 each but I think they are all gone now. Sould have bought one (sob, sob).

I personally carry a Raven E1-B every day, and I love it. I also have the E1-A, but my E1-b is tighter fitting blade, and it had the larger thumb disk/square so it is easier to open. I also have 3 CQC-7's but I like the Ravens a little better. the grips on the Ravens fit my hand PERFECTLY, and they feel great! I think the Krydon feels better than the G-10 handles, and they definitely have better grip. I honestly have only held 1 SpecWar, but I did not care for the handle at all. Any Emerson you choose is GREAT! I have a total of 6, and I wouldn't change them for any other knives.
