The picture explains it all...

There is no foward or backward; it's either screwed or unscrewed.

EDITED maybe I need to unscrew it a lot more...

with blade closed slide said screw forward . This should lock the blade in the closed position .Bull back on the screw and this will unlock the blade and allow the blade to be opened.

Well you can't get a more definitive answer than from the guy that designed the knife. :D

The screw must be way too tight.

BTW there isn't actually a whole lot of travel.

Okay, I loosened the screw so it can slide freely. Now, a new problem: it won't engage any type of safety. Whether the button is towards the blade pivot or the butt of the knife, the blade is unlocked and can be opened with the flipper. Any ideas?

Maybe someone removed the ball bearing that engages the safety. You could find out if you take apart the knife.

I can think of a reason someone would remove the safety bearing. On my Baby Boa, (which has a similar safety), The ball would slide into the locked position when the blade was held horizontally in the left hand. This would prevent the blade from opening unless I rotated my wrist. This is something a right-handed user would never experience. I removed the ball from my boa.

My speed bump (the newer version) does not have that problem. The ball stays put unless I engage the lock. It may be that your particular knife was a little loose for the bearing.

I don't think anybody removed the safety; I bought the knife new-in-the-box from a store. I looked inside without taking the knife apart, and I don't see any ball bearing.

Is the blade firmly "seated" in the closed position when you engage the safety?

I tightened the screw on mine, because clipping it onto my pants was activating the safety every time, and I wanted the knife instantly available for use if needed. Bad spot for it, but thats just my take on it.

It is the only feature Ken has ever put on a knife that has given me grief.

(I gotta pick on him some, he's cost me alot of money over the years with his amazing designs.)

I sent it to Kershaw for inspection. Rifon2; no, it wasn't seated. Just kind of hung there until I pushed on the index finger kick.
