Speed Bump?

I've been saving to buy a Spec Bump for awhile now, and I'm pretty excited about the new S30V version coming out. However, I just saw this

It's the "speed bump." Clever name. Anyway, it's identical except it has some sort of non G10 handles, but not zytel or FRN as best I can tell. Also, it has a non coated Sandvik blade.

I need to know everything I can about this knife. I'm getting several knives in the next month and money's tight, so I'm thinking about getting this one....I like how it looks more than the new Spec bump quite a bit which compensates for a lot.

I did read a recent post, but it was focused on the steel...I just need to know as much as I can on this by Monday when I order.

I am guessing (always dangerous  ) that this is a lower cost version of the Spec Bump, judging by blade and handle materials.

Well, I'd agree with you there, I just need to know how well we think it'll perform. I'm almost certain I'll order one with my dodo tomorrow. I've just been wanting to buy a spec bump for so long and i t keeps getting bumped for one reason or another. I have plenty of super steel knives, etc...I'm mostly interested in getting an AO and stud lock, just because I don't have anything like that. I guess I'll be the guinea pig on this one...hopefully, I don't regret it.

well it.s .3 oz lighter than the Spec Bump, so it will feel a tough lighter, but mostly it won't have the texture of the G10. It will feel cheaper and more plasticky. I don't know about the 13V6 Sandvick, I've only used 12C7, but that worked fine, however it was for an office knife so it didn't see a lot of hard use.

You could always get the SB and remove the blade and give it a satin finish if you didn't like the coating. The difference in blade steel will be less of a factor, unless you use the knife a lot, than the difference in handle material.

Yeah, the handle is what most concerns me...not that it won't be super grippy, just that it might look or feel cheap...I haven't much room for knives like that. But I don't know much about the handle materials:

injection-molded Akulon with Santoprene over-mold handle

But a lot of this is simply financial. My list is growing and growing and it's becoming unmanageable, so I'm trying to find compromises...the Dodo instead of a Yojimbo, the speed bump instead of the spec bump....I mean, I can find reasons to like both of these more than the other, so it doesn't bother me, but unlike the dodo, I don't really know what I'm getting into here.

Santoprene is a rubber like subtance, CKRT uses it on the asst. openers they have, and I think it's what Benchmade uses on the HK folders as well.

Artfully, the Speed Bump has release date of March 2006.

For me, it's just a personal thing. I don't like the rubbery feeling, unless its hard rubber and checkered

Well, I think this is the one I want...I guess the wait won't kill me, given my financial situation...I'm ordering my dodo tomorrow...I was going to order it and the speed bump (it's listed for sale on several websites) and then get the mini skirmish later....I'll see if I can't scrounge up enough to get the mini skirmish AND dodo, but man, getting pricy there...

The Speed Bump in that picture is a little premature. There will be texturing on both portions of the scale (unlike what is pictured). There is not even a production proto at this time.

Darn. I just knew it wouldn't work...well, whatever prototypes you need to unload, just send them my way.

Really though, I appreciate the news. It seems like every day, Kershaw does something right, in my opinion. Really like the direction the company is going.

Wish I had enough money to buy one of each Bump.

Now see... for me, I fell for the solid-black look just in case I get deployed in the near future. Also, I wanted to really get my hands onto something with S30V and try out the G-10. It will be an upgrade from my current BM 9130 auto with 154CM and my CRKT M16-13M with AUS-8 (which I'm growing to hate more and more everyday, it's sad).

Also though, the speed-assist lured me in... but, obviously both models have it in this situation. Personally, I would go with the Spec Bump.

Oh, and Thomas... when is the release date for the Spec Bump? I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY like to know, :D

Thanks again guys...

P.S. Never hurts to wait Art, lol, :)

The S30V Spec Bump production should start in early/mid Feb.

Santoprene is what a lot of pistol grip manufacturers use. It's kind of a high-durometer kraton. Great for pistol grips, feels cheap on a knife, IMO.
