How much crap can Kershaws assisted openers take? The reason Im asking is because Im picking up a folder for serious outdor use. Im torn between the Spec Bump or an Al Mar SERE 2K.

I guess what I'm asking, is will the assisted openers get "gummed up" if I drop in in the mud, or if it gets realy dirty. By realy dirty I'm talking about mud, plant matter, dried deer blood, the works all packed up in it.

Thanks!

I don't think they're meant to stand up to that kind of stuff. The insides of kershaws seem pretty tight and if something gets in there, you would have some problems. However, when I had my Scallion, it seemed that the speed safe mechanism is totally contained inside the handle, between the scale and the liner.

You're looking for a fixed blade, balisong, or maybe a framelock. BTW, assisted opening loses it's charm real fast.

I replaced my Scallion spring so many times I finally quit. They are neat but the inevitable will happen if you flick it open and closed a bunch.
