i recently received my first zt 0350, i was wondering if these are usually stiff to open. when using the flipper, my finger started to hurt. after serching i read that lube may not be enough to fix this problem, or maybe i can replace the torsion bar contraption. open to any and all opinions. i love this knife and want it to work properly. what would you do? thanks all

I've had some stiff AO's from Kershaw from time to time. They tend to break in some. You can oil the pivot and check the pivot bolt tension, maybe it's over-tight. But, my preference with these flipper AO's is that I want it to be a bit hard to fire. It lessens the possibility of an accidental opening.

try loosening the pivot a little. it'll wear on. also there's a little technique to where you apply leverage to the flipper.

you'll get the hang of it. as others have said, there's usually a greater resistance to opening (initially) in assisted knives to prevent accidental opening.

You can always remove it and drill a detent. I did that to a ZT300.

Loosening the pivot certainly does help. But the way it's designed, it does provide some resistance to opening the blade. Just enough so that it doesn't open in your pocket, but not so much as to be difficult to use.

all the replies make sense, i was just worried for nothing i guess. rather have
it a little stiff, than an unwanted opening. thanks for the advice everyone.

nah, you were reasonable. you bought a pretty expensive folder and expected it to be perfect out of the box. there's nothing wrong with that.

That said, probably best to wear it in over paying for shipping and waiting a couple weeks for the turnaround. just watch tv and flick it open and closed a lot and in a few days it'll be great.

I spoke to Kershaw last week about removing the torsion bar on my 350.

A manager said the torsion bar on more recent 350s can be removed and he asked me to call back with the serial number to verify that it can be done.

I believe I bought mine in late October.

I like the shape of the 350, but not the A/O or the flipper. If I can use the thumb studs as a manual opener, I will have the torsion bar removed.

I don't know why, but those are 2 funny sentences.

Thomas,

I asked Charlie the exact location and was looking for the drill bit size.

The common sense quote has been my signature line for many years.

If you think about it, it's lacking in many Homo Sapians!

I broke the torsion bar in my old Mini Mojo and left it in years ago. It's worked fine since then. It doesn't have a detent in any visible way, but I guess leaving the spring in still caused it to act like a detent somehow. worked great.

Understood, and agree, but I'm still smiling. :p

I used a diamond tip on the Dremel to drill a partial detent hole. Drill where the "track" stops on the blade.

The Mini Mojo has a safety integrated into the flipper that would keep it from opening until you pull back on the flipper. There is no ball to go into a detent.

With no spring, and no lock mechanism to cause drag (the studlock doesn't come into play until the blade is almost fully open), it ought to flip pretty smoothly.

Exactly what I did and it has helped.
